My Most Embarrassing Moment as An Upcoming Producer
I was so embarrassed i stopped playing tracks for them and quickly switched the subject..
What's up forum!
Hope you're having a wonderful holiday season! Over the past few days, I've been torn between sending a cheesy holiday email, or a message from the heart, or giving you something free that you could use on a daily basis..
well, I think I've settled on a version of all three.
I really appreciate all (15) of you who open my emails 😂 lol .. But seriously I really do appreciate it and hope you gain something from what I'm delivering..
The vulnerability here reminds me of one of my most embarrassing times as a producer.
When i first started my musical journey in 2008, I was super timid about playing my music for anyone and I'd finally mustered up the courage to play some beats for a close friend and her girlfriend.
I remember playing one or two tracks and one of the young ladies looked to me with a confused face and asked me:
"where are all of the words?"
I felt so ashamed, lol... I mean i put so much time and effort into the music I think I'd expected them to be impressed or something..
Or at least offer a compliment...
Or criticism...
SOMETHING!!!
I was so embarrassed i stopped playing tracks for them and quickly switched the subject..
It took me some time, but I realize that most people are not artists so they're not listening to the music in the same way we do..
For some of us, the music itself moves us.. for others its the artists.. or sometimes the combination of both..
So while we want to make our music as elaborate and emotionally riveting or energizing, remember that you're making the track for the artist.. and the artist is making the track for THEIR audience..
Fast forward to 2022, now IF I have a chance to play a track for ANYONE artist or listener.. . 99% of the time im damn near performing and 'scatting' in the rhythm or cadence or swag that I envision an artist blessing the track..
And the results are typically the same....
NOTHING like the first time LOL!!!
Remember music is all about energy..
through sound, you have the power to transfer your energy...
If you're less than confident about a track, or have no direction.. chances are you'll have to send it a million places before it gets somewhere that some 'good' music is made...
When you're confident about your tracks and/or have a vision for where it could go, you can turn that into a whole entire movement..
So learn from my mistake, never ever ever play a track that you have no vision for... and be prepared to step INTO your personality and SHOW another artist or appreciator what is special about YOU..
That's what this is all about.
So use a bit of my wisdom every day..
Stay creative and be fearless in your approach as an artist..
whatever your energy is , put it into the music, and keep it simple... so when you sell it to the artist they can see your vision with space to live on the track.
