Fender just dropped an update to its Fender Studio Pro, formerly known as Studio One, and if you weren't paying attention, you missed the most important part.

Fender Studio Pro 8.1 is essentially Studio One Pro with Fender branding and a significantly deeper feature set, shipped a little over a week ago on June 9, 2026, with three huge additions that hit differently than the usual point-release noise. A Moises Studio integration baked directly into the software, a naive Vocal Tune plugin, and an in-DAW studio assistant (in beta)

These aren't incremental changes; they're making a statement about where they believe desktop software is going.

This is the Practical Audio breakdown, no pre-language, just honest feedback that matters to you.

What Is Fender Studio Pro 8.1 (and What Happened to Studio One)?

So, a little background: it’s odd for me to keep referring to this program as Fender Studio Pro, when for so long it was called Studio One. From here on, I’ll chill with the Studio One References, but just so you know, Fender acquired PreSonus, and in January 2026 they rebranded Studio One Pro as Fender Studio Pro.

Since that launch early this year, this is the first major feature update. The core DAW is essentially the same as Studio One, but they've added a layer on top of it that points more towards AI integration at the DAW level via a virtual assistant. They’re making a big statement.

The Moises Integration: Stem Separation Inside Your DAW

So let's look at exactly what that layer is; the first significant layer is the current trend. Year over year, we see trends in audio, granulators, multi-effects, and this go around it’s Stem Separation and AI. Rather than approaching this in a mechanical/mathematical way, Fender Studio Pro has integrated Moises directly into the software, adding AI stem separation and vocal transformation.

AI Stem Separation is Moises' flagship capability. It uses AI to isolate and completely remove specific parts of a song. It's not the best, but it’s not the worst either. The fact that it's available in a DAW, meh, IMHO; if you’ve ever listened to any human-generated trackouts/stems, they always have way less artifact. BUT that doesn't take away the educational usage of this. Being able to break down your favorite tracks and create from a new understanding is one of the benefits of being in the actual studio working with actual musicians. SO having that ‘ability’ at the desk is a plus.

Especially when you pair that ability with their Voice studio. You can generate your own parts, upload your own vocals, and replace them with a new singer/ speaker.

For the isolated producer, or one without access to the best musicians, this is a game changer. Even for sync producers, this allows you to create entire backing tracks from a single element.

Vocal Tune Plug-In: Native Pitch Correction Without the Add-On Cost

Native pitch correction is the next feature update. FL Studio, Logic Pro, Ableton, Pro Tools all feature Native vocal correction. This isn't something as advanced as Melodyne or a dedicated Vocal plugin; however, it gets the job done.

What’s more interesting is the pitch curves on audio tracks. This new update is something more worth mentioning.

Now the pitch of a sample or audio track can be modulated inside of automation lanes. A pretty powerful feature.

Studio Assistant: AI Support That Doesn’t Break Your Flow

I’m guessing this is the version of FL Studio’s Gopher; I think it is an intelligent approach and more in line with where AI integration in a DAW should be heading.

This is one of the more tantalizing aspects of AI utilization, especially for entry-level users. Instead of scouring the web for hours trying to figure something out, all that expertise can now be found inside the DAW without going to the ‘help’ menu.

This is definitely something I would have benefitted from on my beginning journey. I spent so much time reading the manual and browsing help forums; this would have saved time. I think that, in the future, the best version of this will be paired with a smart player assistant and the ability to actually create the desired outcomes.

What I don’t  want to see is a version of this where the generated content is created with artifacts; I still wait for the day where AI is smart enough to utilize instruments like Kontakt or East West Play and produce MIDI that can trigger keyswitches for realistic performances.

SO this brings a level of optimism to that dream.

One of the more commonly overlooked aspects of any software is the included packs. The perception of low quality from a DAW or developer leads many people to rip, steal, and navigate sketchy sites. Trust me, we’ve all done it.

Fender Studio Pro ships with virtually every sound pack that Fender produces. Chances are, some of the samples that you’d find on sketchy sites are directly inside of these packs. So much stuff is recycled and reused, and often you can find some great royalty-free gems inside of your DAW.

Should MPC and Hardware-First Producers Care About This?

Honestly, yes.

There is a shift happening in the industry, and you need to be aware of what is taking place, not necessarily involved. A DAW like Fender Studio signals to the market that it is bold enough to follow suit with changes.

I personally have no place for this; however, if your workflow consists of stem separation and voice recording. You’d want to take a look at an all in one solution this wont force you to have multiple subscriptions..

It's a tricky position to be in, but ultimately you’ve gotta see the bigger picture.

The Bigger Picture: What Fender’s DAW Move Signals for the Industry

Watch the pattern, not the product.

Fender acquiring Studio One Pro and placing it under the FMIC umbrella, with their first major release introducing major AI-assisted workflow tools, is a bigger consolidation play playing out across the music tech industry.

We’ve already seen this with inMusic and its acquisition of Native Instruments. They also absorbed iZotope and Plugin Alliance.

But the bigger signaling is the Moises partnership. Moises is a licensed AI, meaning they have done the work to properly and ethically train their models on properly compensated artists. Having this built into a DAW, at a time when multiple companies are struggling to implement AI in a market that scrutinizes AI data provenance, is a powerful positioning move.

Now, whether they become a bigger contender against Ableton, Logic, or FL Studio in the long term is a different question. They have a solid niche base, and that base may follow them out of the standalone-DAW era.

The era of the DAW is coming to an end, and software is becoming the hub; every major player in the industry is building and improving that ‘hub’ to touch every part of the production chain.

PAL Verdict: Worth the Switch, Worth the Look, or Wait and See?

Worth the switch? Debatable; if you include the sounds, the features, and the price, yes? But if you’re already rock solid in a workflow like most people are, then this may be more of a distraction than something that you need to hurry up and jump on board with.

Virtually every DAW has some vocal correction, some better than others. Logic Pro had speed fades for years, which honestly has me questioning why I’m not using the program currently.

There are a few more important updates under the hood, updates to one-shot instruments, a new reverb, etc., again all of which you can find done expertly well in a few DAW’s. At this point, it's all subjective; most of what you need to do, you can do with nearly every DAW, except for a small handful of niche ones.

Make this switch if it makes sense, or add it to your arsenal if you want. But if you don't need to and you don't want to, don’t waste your time even thinking about it.

Akai Professional has done it again; today they officially launched the MPC Key 37 G2, their second-generation keyboard sampler, and had me scrambling to figure out what I’ve missed

For those without an MPC, contemplating getting one, OR who are currently running an MPC setup, just know that this isn’t just a cosmetic update. It's a ground-up internal update wrapped in a nostalgic colorway reminiscent of the cream-colored MPCs of the 1980s. Let's dive into a full technical breakdown of what has changed, what is going well, and how this unit fits into the new updates. Let’s dive in.

What is the MPC Key 37 G2?

The MPCK Key 37 G2 is a standalone hardware groovebox built in the legacy of the MPC and its predecessor, the MPC Key 37. With semi-weighted ‘synth keys’, sixteen backlit, responsive MPC backlit expressive pads, and a 7-inch display, the goal for this device is to completely replace your DAW. Akai’s new MPC 3.9 OS offers full production capabilities, no computer required, while still functioning as a USB-C audio/MIDI controller and interface when docked into a DAW session.

If you’re looking for a great sketch station you can take from studio to studio, or a DAWless writing rig, a satellite unit for tracking sessions, or whatever you can creatively think of using this for, chances are you’ve found the right device.

The Processing Upgrade: 8- Core CPU, 4GB RAM, 64 GB Storage

Honestly, this is one of the largest changes affecting performance. The new 8-core processor, the same as the MPC Live III and MPC XL, completely transforms the Key 37 G2 from something that is a ‘capable entry-level sampler’ to a machine that can sustain real production sessions in standalone or DAW mode and still introduce the new user to the MPC line. The official figures from Akai raise the plugin instrument track limit to 32 instances and 16 stereo audio tracks, completely doubling the capabilities.

4GB of RAM directly affects project load time and headroom for sample and plugin-heavy sessions. The increased limit allows you to actually build without waiting or crashing due to memory constraints.

MPC 3.9 OS: Linear Arranger, Built-In Synthesis, DAW Interoperability.

Both the new-generation MPCs ship with MPC 3.9 and the full linear arranger. This feature set has been updated in the MPC Software, so song building, arrangement automation, and clip-to-timeline workflows now also work in Standalone, DAW mode, and Plugin mode. MPC 3.9 also adds a built-in oscillator engine for integrated synthesis. Meaning that on each of your drum pads you now have an oscillator to create synths, effects, 808s, and more.

If this is your primary writing tool, you can now import your stuff into a session more readily and accessibly than before (we’ll go deeper later on)

Keybed and Pads; What a Pro Player Actually Feels

Unchanged from Gen 1, the 37 semi-weighted, dyna-action keys still have monophonic aftertouch, pitch bend, and mod wheel. The keys themselves are roughly 13 cm, which is a little shorter than typical synth keyboards. The white keys are a bit more responsive than the firmer black keys. Honestly, it has a controller-grade ‘feel’ rather than a piano action feel, a light trade-off for a unit built around pad-based production.

Connectivity: Where The Real Upgrade (and Real Limitations) Live

The absolute most consequential change for the MPC line is the move from USB-B to USB-C. At first glance, you may notice the missing USB port; however, the USB-C now supports 24in/24 out streaming and expanded MIDI from host to device.

ok, so before I go further, what does this mean

You can literally plug your MIDI cable into your computer and have audio and MIDI, with your computer acting as the hub. All you have to do is route your audio and MIDI to the appropriate devices in your DAW, and virtually everything you need is handled instantly. No computer mode, just route to USB audio and send audio or MIDI back and forth to your PC.

So if you’re still running 1/4cables OR if you’ve only got a laptop, the expansion capabilities are virtually limitless with this upgrade.

Trust me, this is one of those sleeper updates that you’ll see the advantage when you start to expand.

But What Does It Sound Like?

This is for the subset of people that wonder what the ‘converters’ sound like or if it has the genuine MPC ‘grit’

NO, it doesn’t sound like that, and honestly that sounds bad,

but the MPC itself sounds GREAT.

It's pure, uncompressed digital audio at its finest, enabling you, as a producer, to create with limitless abundance.

Unlike all the other gritty, crunchy, vibey (gear elite fomo) MPCs, the MPC Key 37 G2 Ships with 13 Instrument plugins, like OPX, Jura, Subfactory, alongside six featured expansion packs: Acoustic Tools, Classic Drum Machines, Apollo Retro Kits, Marco Polo Lo-Fi Book, Gemini Future Classic Synths and Orion Future Classic Workstations. How To Pitch Beats To Major Artists (Without A BeatStars Link)

SO here is a simple infrastructure ‘hack’ that can instantly be taken seriously in circles where it matters.

Most producers think beat shopping is about volume: create your BeatStars and spam people with enough links; eventually something will stick. But the ones who break through aren’t doing more per se; they’re doing things differently. They built an infrastructure alongside connections.

This post will break down the exact approach I used as SOVLTRON to protect my beats, register rights, and always be ready to deliver a high-quality professional pitch while remaining humble.

Why The Best Producers Walked Away From Beat Leasing

Over the years, I noticed that a lot of the producers who made a big name for themselves went away from beat leasing and typically were working directly with artists. People like Superstar O, Anno Domini Beats, and Johnny Juliano were once dominating the SoundCsolick lane; now these guys were creating their own infrastructure, their own networks, and weren't relying on selling the same lease over and over. Even Soundcloud producers were choosing to stay within their ecosystem and weren't relying on beat leases. Even though DJ Pain1 is correct that selling leases is not dead, there is more than one approach to making money and getting placements.

The Cold Outreach Myth: Why Sending More Beats Gets You Nowhere

In the past, I've definitely sent out beat packs, sent cold DMs, emails, etc. And for the most part, all of that effort yielded very few results. I've sent beat packs or Dropbox links only to find the track has been used and credited to someone else. So along the way, I've learned valuable lessons about who to trust and how to present myself as a producer.

The issue with cold outreach isn’t just that people ignore your messages. It's the format altogether that signals the wrong message. A Dropbox link simply says ‘these are files, ’ not necessarily a body of work. A BeatStars link signals that your work is available to anyone with $30 (and they’ll be fighting these people for months to take their content down)

Neither method signals that you’re a serious producer with a real catalog, real dedication to your craft, and a real business behind the process of creating music. The producers who are getting placements at the major level aren't betting on some major artist seeing one of their thousands of emails. They aren't going harder on DM’s; rather, they built a system that takes care of the business first and lets the music do the talking second.

The Infrastructure Stack: Distribution, Rights, and SoundCloud Pro

So right now I'm currently releasing through my distributor, which hits all major platforms. Places like LANDR and Symphonic are phenomenal for this. Next, I registered with The MLC. This makes sure all streaming platforms can stream and pay out royalties from my music. SoundExchange makes sure that royalties are paid out on other platforms like XM radio and Pandora, which is important. Your music could be playing on some random person's Pandora, and you're not collecting your royalties.

The PRO step here is signing up for a SoundCloud Pro account. This allows you to connect your distributor, and all of your releases are now on SoundCloud as well.

Why is this important? SoundCloud has the reputation of being "the people's platform," so its branding is more familiar with indie artists or having a personal connection with the artist. Plus, SoundCloud allows for private playlisting, minus ads. So anything I put on a playlist is almost guaranteed to play instantly, and you can set up the player to allow downloads.

Sending a private playlist lets you quickly share beats with multiple people or update a running list, without worrying about someone stealing or uploading your music. Plus, having an artist presence on all platforms sends the message that you know what you're doing.

Why This Approach Beats BeatStars When A Real Opportunity Shows Up

BeatStars is built for volume sales to the general market. And there's nothing wrong with that; you can even think of it as a shortcut around a lot of the red tape in selling music. No middleman, just straight to whoever is willing to pay.

But let's say you’re dealing with a warm introduction to a major artist’s circle. Coming in with a BeatStars link makes you look more like a vendor than a producer. All of your work is publicly available- exclusives, non-exclusives, all on the marketplace for anyone and priced specifically for rappers at that budget. None of that communicates exclusivity.

The approach I’m describing communicates the opposites. Your catalog is distributed and live on DSP’s, which means the audio fingerprint is already in the system through your distributor. Any attempt to upload a beat to a platform for commercial purposes without clearing it first will immediately be flagged- no threatening, no fussy emails; just expose that your infrastructure handles it.

There may come a day when someone wants to use your beat only to find out that several other people have recorded and tried to upload it to streaming. Don't blow it by sending a link to your Spotify or BeatStars — or even worse, an email.

When you upload your beats through a distributor like LANDR or Symphonic, or any similar service, the audio fingerprint is registered across DSPs. If someone tries to upload that audio commercially without your consent or clearing rights, it will be flagged almost immediately. This gives you control when negotiating your work

Why SoundCloud Pro Instead Of Just Sending A Spotify Link?

Spotify is an amazing fan-facing platform, but it doesn't have curated private ad-free playlists. SoundCloud Pro gives you private playlist functionality with zero ads and the option to download. Plus, it's commonly used amongst producer communities and is a better tool for a pitch than for discovery.

Do I Need To Register With The MLC, BMI/ASCAP and SoundExchange Separately?

Yes, outside of picking one rights organization (BMI or ASCAP) each covers a different revenute stream. BMI/ASCAPandle publishing and composition royalties. The MLC covers mechanicals from streaming . SoundExcange covers digital performance on platorfmrs like Pandora and Sirius XM. Missing one of thse means leaving money uncollected.

How Many Beats Should I Send In A Pitch Playlist?

Six to eight solid tracks is the right range. Enough to show consistency and the range of your talent, tight enough to not waste anyone’s time. Make sure your sequencing is intentional, strongest tracks first. Curate the pitch; don’t just dump beats on someone

Absolutely yes, as a separate revenue stream running in the background. It doesn’t have to fully replace your direct placement approach. So imagine this scenario:
You’ve spent the past three hours (more like three days) locked in on a mix. Drums are punchy and locked in; the bass is singing right; vocals are forward and in your face. Then you add the reverb, and suddenly the whole mix sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom and washed out with granular delay.

ok maybe not that dramatic, but does that sound vaguely familiar?

Reverb is one of those sneaky tools that seem simple until you start to apply it yourself (especially the DAW stock Reverb), and it’s obvious that the reverb is the problem, right? lol
The frustrating part is that a bad reverb won't announce itself in a mix; it's a sneaky little devil, blurring the lines and softening transients randomly throughout the mix. Apply the wrong reverb, and your bright, high-punchy mix suddenly sounds wet and washed.

And no, unfortunately, it’s NOT the reverb’s problem, yet it’s how you’re using it.

When you’re using reverb right, you necessarily hear it; you feel it. There’s a space, there’s dimension, things breathe, and elements that needed to sit back a bit actually sit back. Vocals sit slightly above the track without competing or sounding superimposed, and the whole track sounds and feels as if it were recorded in a physical space rather than assembled on a grid. So, with that being said, let's dive in.

So What is Reverb Actually Doing?

All right, so in the plainest way possible, what is reverb actually doing? Reverb simulates the natural acoustic reflections of a space by creating a dense cloud of tiny, overlapping echoes that blend. Think of reverb as the sound you hear when you yell inside a big hall or auditorium. Instead of hearing distinct repeats, your voice fills the room, creating a smooth wash of sound that makes everything feel bigger and more alive.

A simple way to remember the difference: Echo is like shouting into a canyon and hearing your voice bounce back to you once or twice - 'Hey... hey.' Reverb is like standing in a gym and clapping your hands. Instead of a clear repeat, you get a lingering, blended tail that quickly fades out. Echo equals distinct repeats; reverb equals a smooth, blended ambiance from lots of tiny reflections all close together. This is why reverb helps place sounds in a space, while echo makes sounds stand out on their own.

So a reverb is drastically different from an echo, right? So a lot of times, it’s easy to kind of think of creating space, and immediately going to either an echo or a reverb, but they are two different ways of creating space that are very effective in creating depth in a mix. And so, essentially, what happens with reverb, and the reason why it’s used, is that in early recordings, you know, a lot of these recordings were done inside of a specific space. They had a distinct sonic quality, and the instruments blended very well, creating a realistic-sounding mix.

So, without that reverb, essentially, you have a bunch of microphones plugged into a direct input source, and the sound can sound incredibly flat and lifeless. So reverb helps create dimension and depth, and balances the ratio of direct sound from the microphone to the room's reflected sound. And so this enables you to place elements in the foreground or background, creating cohesion in the mix. And actually, it can create an emotion as well.

So, in my experience, reverb has been one of those incredibly powerful, subtle tools that’s at the top of the professional mixing deck, that when you absolutely understand how to use reverb, your mixes will sound even more professional, because you’ve got a good balance of emotion and vibe and polish. You’re enhancing how the elements interact within the mix, which, in turn, creates different experiences in the listeners’ ears.

So what Is Making Your Reverb Sound Muddy?

So why does reverb get muddy? The real causes? So... If you’ve ever slapped a reverb on something and noticed that the entire mix immediately becomes muddy or sounds like a wash, more than likely your reverb is receiving excessive low-end content.

A lot of the time, the algorithms in a reverb will amplify the low end in the 200-600 hertz range. And if this isn’t filtered out, this is gonna create a muddy, boomy, messy buildup. And especially so if you’re a cave, if the decay time is too long. So these 2 things combined result in low frequencies stretched out across the entire mix.

So while your base is hitting, while your kick is hitting, while the bass drum is hitting, you’re also getting those combined frequencies of any low frequencies coming from a pad, combining with that. Sometimes they’ll cancel out, and sometimes they’ll double themselves, and you get this muddy mix of frequency. And another thing is the too much reverb level. A very common beginner mistake is making the reverb so wet that it's hard to hear. Especially if you’re used to reverb that comes with presets in many sense and rumplers, a lot of those reverbs are meant to enhance the sound design.

Whereas in a mix, you’re using reverb to add cohesion in a similar way that you would use a compressor in a very mild way. Reverb is about feeling. So excessive reverb levels, or reverb applied to too many tracks, are gonna fill up all the available sonic space, creating a dense, washed-out mix. And then one of the more common mistakes among beginners, ain’t even professionals alike, is having 0 pre-delay.

This causes the reverb to start essentially at the same time as the dry source signal. It hides the initial transient of the instrument, and it’s gonna make it sound wet and indistinct from the background. And so, a little bit of pre-delay allows you to hear the instrument and separate that from the reverb tail. And so, too many elements in the mix, too many frequencies in decay times, essentially just pulling, and this happens more frequently than not when you pull a preset out or you add reverb on every channel.

Right? So, especially if you’re working on standalone devices like the MPC, XL, or anything like that, it’s very easy to slap a reverb on something and keep moving because you’re in the production process. However, these things can be mitigated with very simple techniques that professional engineers use.

If you hear a muddy or washed-out reverb in your mix, here’s a quick troubleshooting checklist you can run through right away:

For example, if I hear a muddy reverb, my first instinct is to say, "There is too much low-frequency content coming into this reverb.” Chances are, we need to cut it. However, that may not be the case. What actually might be the case is that there are too many elements going into the same reverb. And, of course, reverb should never go on a kick drum or a bass instrument, unless specifically for sound design.

And a lot of times, we’ll try to add all of the elements into the reverb, thinking that’s creating a cohesive mix. However, the kick drum is competing with the bass frequencies, which may also be competing with the low frequencies in your piano, causing the mix. So, the 1st thing is definitely frequency, but the 2nd thing to consider is how many things are being fed into your reverb, and how loud they are?

How I Set Up Reverb on The MPCXL

So here’s how I typically set up reverb on my Force; the same applies to the MPCXL and, essentially, any other device/DAW.

The first thing you want to do is imagine your space.

Personally, I’m imagining standing at the center/front of the stadium stage.

I want the clap to reverberate, but I also want to hear a little slapback. Personally, I like the bounce it creates when it’s synced to the tempo, so that’s what we’ll go for.

Second, I’ll set d my return track for my reverb, and then route my clap to that track.

Pre-Delay: The setting most producers ignore

In a nutshell, pre-delay is the small amount of delay between the sound source and the reverb tail.

I really discovered this while trying to emulate the technique that I just showed you. I was always impressed by Johnny Juliano and his ability to add dynamics and tension in his beats. He did so by using reverb rhythmically.

With pre-delay, I typically follow this reference from Mastering.com. They’ve got an amazing course on reverb that I highly recommend checking out.

But realistically, I'm setting the pre-delay as such.

For ambiance around 0-10ms
For a room between 5-25ms
For Chamber or strings between 5-40ms
and for a Hall reverb about 10-50ms

And all these will depend on what type of space you’re trying to emulate and ultimately what the mix needs.

For example, a vocal that I want to sit inside the mix might get a little more pre-delay, whereas a snare I want to push into the background a bit might get less.

Drums, Melodics, Vocals- Concrete Reverb Rules to Live By.

All right, so let’s say you’ve got your reverb set up and you’re trying to figure out what you want to send to where and if there’s a right way or a wrong way to send certain elements to your reverb. So here’s what I do. I avoid sending the base at all costs, no matter what. However, there might be instances for sound design where reverb on a base may sound good. At that point, I will print that.

That way, I have ultimate control over the audio and the sonics of everything else. I start with a 100% wet signal, send it fully to the reverb, and pretty much dial it back to my taste. Every element will have a characteristic that sounds good in the mix. It doesn’t mean that it needs a specific place. In the space that you create, ultimately, it just needs to have space in the mix. So how does reverb factor into that? Reverb is just what brings all of those elements together.

So if you want a washed-out sound, you’re going to add more reverb to the keys. If you want a washed-out guitar, you’re gonna do the same thing. Ultimately, the use of reverb is your creative decision. I can unequivocally say that every element in the mix is going to sound better once you add some level to it—especially vocals.

It’s the difference between the vocals sitting on top of the mix, almost like the person is standing on top of the CD cover, and a fully comprehensive mix, with the vocalist as critical to the song as any other instrument. One hand down, for me, is automating the reverb time or any reverb parameter during the mix.

For me, this creates unpleasant sonic artifacts that end up sounding weird. Artifacts can show up as little clicks, pops, abrupt changes in volume, or unnatural reverb tails—stuff that distracts from the mix and makes transitions sound artificial or glitchy instead of smooth. In certain instances, it may be a creative decision, but for the most part, I avoid automating reverbs or delays to prevent such artifacts. I will automate the sends instead, which means changing the volume going to the reverb. That doesn’t affect the effect's algorithm, so transitions stay clean and natural.

“More Reverb = More Space” - Myth Bust

One of the biggest reverb myths in home production is that adding more reverb creates a bigger, wider mix. Here's why that's wrong — and what actually creates space.

I’m pretty sure you’ve loaded up your favorite VST, loaded up preset after preset until you had a ‘decent’ sounding beat, or at least one you were really jocking, then played it back on another system and heard nothing but mid and mud.

And here you are, thinking you’re doing something with the latest version of Serum and Nexus 5; however, all of those reverbs are clashing together and creating a muddy mess.

Or let’s say you’ve heard your favorite artist, and you think that reverb is the thing you’re missing the most. So, naturally, you crank up the maximum Vahlhalla reverb ON the track and call it a day.

Or even, let’s say you’ve got it all figured out and you know each element needs its own ‘sapce’ in the mix, so what do you do? Lowcut everything (so things don’t get muddy) and start flying those things out left and right. After all, panning the reverbs will create space, right?

I’m not gonna say these are bad decisions per se, but what I will say is that using too much reverb, or going ham with the reverb and panning, is not the right decision. agaithiggoesessehavingng too many individual elements with different reverbs, too many reverbs, or too much wet signal. Reverb is a finesse tool that can help create depth and space in a mix.

However, what really creates space is each element having its own sonic space in the mix to begin with.

After that, start thinking about WHERE the mix is taking place. This will establish your single reverb, which will ultimately carry over to other return tracks that highlight parts of that room.

From there, it's best to remove your reverbs from all sources and utilize your return tracks for everything. This immediately gives you better control over your mix.

But reverb is only part of the equation; to accurately simulate what happens in the real world when we move closer to or farther from a sound, we have to make EQ, compression, and volume adjustments.

THESE things, in combination with reverb, create a realistic sense of space and depth in a mix.

I’ll admit, most of my early work was a wash in reverb, and what did I eventually do? You betcha!! high cut, and fly those instruments out!!! And honestly, it works!!

BUT, you can get a better effect, more control, and not have to fight against headroom when you know what you’re doing with just a few strong reverb choices.

FAQ

How much reverb is too much?

If you can clearly hear the reverb as a separate event after the dry sound, it’s probably too much. A good reverb sits underneath the mix — you notice it more when it’s gone than when it’s there.

Should I put reverb on my 808 or bass?

Usually no. Low frequencies build up fast in a reverb tail and create exactly the mud you’re trying to avoid. If you want the bass to feel roomy, try a very short room reverb with heavy low-cut on the return, or skip it entirely and create space with other elements.

What is pre-delay on reverb?

Pre-delay is the gap between the dry signal and the start of the reverb tail. It keeps the sound attack clean and punchy before the reverb fills in. Even 10–20ms of pre-delay can make a muddy reverb snap back into focus.

What’s the difference between send reverb and insert reverb?

Insert reverb sits directly on a channel and processes the whole signal. Send reverb routes a portion of the signal to a separate reverb channel. Send reverb is almost always better for mixing because it keeps the dry signal clean and lets you share one reverb across multiple elements.

How do I use reverb on the MPCXL specifically?

The MPCXL has onboard effects, including reverb, accessible per track or via the mixer. You can also use AIR Music Tech plugins as inserts or in a send/return configuration. Setting up a dedicated return track with an AIR reverb and routing sends from your drum and melodic tracks gives you the most control.

What reverb settings work for trap and hip-hop beats?

Short-to-medium decay (0.8–1.5 seconds), pre-delay of 15–30ms, and a low-cut on the reverb return around 200–300Hz. Snares and claps can handle a little more decay. Hi-hats usually don’t need reverb at all.

Why does my mix sound far away when I add reverb?

High wet mix level and no pre-delay are the usual culprits. Keep the wet signal lower than you think (sometimes 15–25% is enough), add pre-delay to protect the attack, and make sure the dry signal has good presence before reverb is applied.

Can I use the same reverb on every element?

You can share a reverb return across elements by using different send levels — drums get a little, melodics get a bit more. But some elements benefit from a different type of reverb entirely. A room reverb on drums and a hall or plate on a pad can help them sit in different spaces, even within the same mix.

Today, the music technology world woke up to news that’s been brewing for the past few months. In case you’ve been under a rock, the company behind your favorite plugins like Traktor, Kontakt, Maschine, and Ozone has officially signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by inMusic Brands!

And if that name sounds familiar, it should, inMusic has recently acquired companies like Moog Music, M-Audio, and Rane, and is home to the entire Akai Pro line of products. That’s right, the same company that makes the MPC now owns the flagship sampler platform the entire industry runs on. (and its hardware competitor battery)

SO here’s everything you need to know about the acquisition and what it means

What Just Happened?

We reported on Native Instruments’ preliminary insolvency proceedings back in March. CEO Nick Williams acknowledged at the time that the company was in active merger/acquisition conversations with multiple parties. That process was concluded today with Music Brands as the buyer.

Ironically, signed at Superbooth, the transaction will close in the coming weeks, pending the standard process under German Insolvency Law.

The deal is a 100% acquisition, meaning inMusic acquires Native Instruments in its entirety, including hardware, software, and all subsidiary brands, Brainworkx and Plugin Alliance included. Not to mention the 25 million users that are now a part of the inMusic ecosystem.

Why was NI in Trouble

We didn’t cover much of this in our insolvency article. You can read more on that here.

In 2021, a private equity deal went sideways, and NI sold a majority stake to an investment firm, Francisco Partners. That leveraged buyout left the company roughly $250m in debt, with annual revenue of $25m. NI had a balance sheet that could never survive the post-pandemic market adjustment in the music software industry. sector

After years of trying to restructure, lay off massive numbers of employees, and pivot toward membership models, etc., nothing could fix the fundamental deficit. As of early this year, insolvency proceedings were the only remaining path for NI to stay ‘alive’.

Notably, the community behind products like Kontakt, Maschine, and Traktor stayed loyal, which may have made the acquisition more palatable for a company like Inmusica, which has been able to keep the gears running post-pandemic.

What inMusic Gets

First off, inMusic gets the credit for completing one of the largest software acquisitions in music history. Since their 1992 purchase of Numark, they have been a hardware-first company.

Their purchase of Akai in 2005 signaled a greater ability to turn failing companies around by embracing advancing technology, and Akai Pro’s, as well as AIR, Moog, Denon, and M-Audio, remain staples in music professionals’ arsenals.

Bragging rights aside, they’ve added to their arsenal of successful products:

Jack O’Donnell, CEO of inMusic, says the company is committed to continued investment across all brands and to a long-term approach to innovation.

Basically, stating that they will continue to make winners out of companies that were fledgling in the first place.

The MPC Connection and What I Really Feel

I’m not gonna lie. As soon as I saw this news this morning, I was excited. I mean, I’m super happy that in music is taking this step to bring in some high-quality products like native instruments, Kontakt, and Maschine into their product line. I’m excited for the Force. I’m excited for the MPC.

I do think it’s a great collaboration. If you haven’t been paying attention, the cloud supply, the duets, and the Native Instruments and expansion packs have indicated a larger collaboration between the two companies.

And my honest take on it is that it’s for the better of both. I don’t think anything changes with the MPC.

I think, if anything, the deeper the NPC gets and the deeper the integrations get, the better the software becomes.

But I don’t think the product itself will change. Remember, the Maschine looks like an MPC because the MPC was first. It was groundbreaking, and its style works. Everything else is a workflow. adjustment.

So one thing I don’t want to see in music is the adoption of Native Instruments’ workflow in the MPC ecosystem.

I believe that Native Instruments has a very powerful media editor built into Maschine. That could be utilized. The tightest integration with NKS should also be utilized.

And they should take a look at how the keyboards integrate with Maschine and the software. Outside of that, Akai has already established itself as a leader in the industry, and they don’t need to change much.

A few videos I’ve seen today suggest that some creators are a little nervous about this. Now, this is something I foresaw coming for a while, given that native instruments was in preliminary insolvency.

I’m happy to see this. Given the tight integration between contact and Native Instruments hardware, I believe Akai can learn a lot from this ecosystem and borrow features from it for the MPC platform. I do think, however, that you have two competing products, and eventually, one of them will win out in the public's opinion. Which one? I don’t know.

All I know is this: I’ve built my career on Akai’s ecosystem. I’m not going anywhere, a few years ago I opted not to get Kontakt in place of AIR Structure. I do not regret the decision; however, now that Kontakt is under the inMusic umbrella, I believe there is room for my arsenal to grow.

My one message forJackO’Donnelll in this case is not a product message; it is a financing question. ON exit, can we trust the board to see your vision? What is the succession plan? Is inMusic stock a long-term play? With this large a user base, it's almost another brain-er to go public; however, can that version of “the company” withstand the pressure? The questions keep piling…

AKAI Doesn’t Know Who Its Best Customer Is Yet — But I Do

With the recent release and apparent success of the MPC sample, Akai is slowly reclaiming a space it once dominated. -High-end offerings like the MPC Live III and the MPC XL are among the most capable music production hardware units ever released; the MPC sample is a hit. But in truth, the marketing department at AKAI Pro is completely missing a version of their favorite customer.

No, I’m not talking about the boom-bap beatmaker flipping through dusty floppy discs containing soul samples from vintage record stores. Not the SP-1200 YouTube beatmaking influencer softly re-creating the same drum pattern over vintage Japanese samples. Nor is it the preverbial hip-hop YouTube producer knocking out the same 808 patterns that gained them notoriety in the early 2000s.

While those people exist, and yes, they do matter, as they’ve kept the MPC name alive for 30+ years. Akai’s hardware is quietly evolving past them, and there's a whole category of producers sitting right at the intersection of their best efforts and advancing technology and their worst commercial approaches.

I’m one of them

And probably you too.

TLDR [AI overview 🤖]: AKAI is building hardware for electronic, synth-forward, arrangement-focused producers — but selling software like it’s still 2015. The commercial model doesn’t match the product vision. And there’s a hybrid ownership + subscription approach that would fix it for both sides of the transaction — more revenue for AKAI, more creative security for the producer. Here’s exactly what it looks like.

The MPC Is Not What You Think It Is Anymore

If you haven’t taken a look at the current lineup at AKAI lately, the hardware has moved far past its reputation.

The MPC Live III and MPC XL aren’t drum machines, and AKAI has moved away from marketing them as such. They are completely standalone music production centers. Each containing 8-core processors, up to simultaneous plugin instances, CV/gate outputs expanding modular integrations, stem separation, clip launching, and full arrangement, the MPC product line isn't’t just for ‘in-the-box box’ producers,

its’ a product suite designed for someone running a hybrid studio setup,

not some youngin’ chopping up beats in slicex or the old head chopping up beats on his dusty ass “MP”
This new ecosystem is for the sound designer, the sample maker, the modular synth enthusiast.

The Rennaisance Musician

Showcasing demonstrations from Teddy Riley, Young Chop and even EDM artist at its launch at NAMM 2026, these artists introductions aren’t by chance, its powerful brand signaling.

IMHO, the AKAI Force is where AKAI takes this even further, where the MPC has blossomed into a full production center, the Force was always built for clip-based, arrangement-first electronic music workflow. If you’re making samples, creating House music, techno, ambient, experimental, or today’s Hip-Hop and R&B, the Force is arguably the better product offering than the MPC XL … even at the same price point.

I personally use the Force,

I use it every day, and if it made sense and I could justify the spend right now, I’d upgrade to the MPC XL. But for now, with the Force, I still have something just as competitive (as far as production).

I 100% plan on staying in the AKAI ecosystem longer because AKAI is clearly building towards the artist that I am. However, the products are right. The strategy behind delivering them is not.

And yes, I’m talking about their software.

The Real Problem: Ownership Anxiety Is a Workflow Killer

Here’s the tension point every Force and MPC user is going to feel at some point.

You’re building a production suite around this hardware or integrating it into an existing setup. REAL money has been invested not just in hardware but in the effects and instruments that live inside of it. Between the MPC Instrument Collection, the Creative FX collection, and some of the newer NI play series instruments, you’re slowly building your unique sonic identity around this toolkit.

Akai is releasing new products and updates enough to keep the equipment feeling ‘new’ yet familiar; however, when you start looking at the prices, everything becomes expensive, and things start to feel unstable.

Some stuff is outright purchaseable, especially when on sale or gets bundled with new hardware (sometimes they give legacy users new stuff when new hardware is released, too).

But even eventually, with all of the releases, it feels like AKAI is soon headed towards subscription territory. And if that’s the case, what is the answer to this fundamental question: “If I’m building my sound around these tools, what happens when I stop paying?”

And that question matters. It’s not just about financial paranoia; it's a legitimate branding concern.

If my core instruments are locked to a subscription status, my ability to open old projects and deliver them to clients, or to work without internet connectivity, is at risk. And that’s not some hypothetical question; it’s happening to producers across the industry, including at Akai.

Now, of course, AKAI doesn't have a subscription model yet. Still, the question poses anxiety and a form of ‘analysis paralysis’ that ultimately is a tax on your creative process and on AKAI's potential revenue.

Why the Current Models Both Miss the Mark

• Pure subscription (the Netflix model) ‘Solves’ the access problem but immediately creates an ownership problem. You’re essentially licensing the content for a low monthly price, but you own nothing, or very little of it.

For a producer building a catalog over time, that’s a bad trade. The tools that define your sound should disappear because a payment failed, nor should you pay 2-10x what they cost to access them.

• Pure one-time purchase (the traditional model) ‘solves’ the ownership issue but creates the access problem they are currently in.

Individual instruments retail for between $99 and $499 each. The full ecosystem will cost well over $1k at purchase, which most producers at this tier are not going to spend on software in one transaction. SO they effectively buy nothing, the cheapest thing, or only units that are on sale, and the full potential of the unit and customer value goes untapped.

Both models fail AKAI commercially (which is why I speculate they introduced the MPC Sample into the mix). A pure subscription model builds EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) revenue but doesn't create the incentive to navigate the hardware value ladder. One-time purchases create transactional customers who disappear until the next hardware release; these are the biggest complainers and detractors of the messaging AKAI wants about its products. Effectively, this creates ‘vampires’ with Akai products and no ongoing connection to the ecosystem.

There’s a third model that solves all of this. And it’s a blueprint which already exists.

What MeldaProduction Gets Right (And Where It Breaks Down)

I’ve been a fan of Meldaproduction products for some time, and they have been running a ‘subscribe to own’ model on their complete bundle for several years. The idea is simple: you pay your monthly fee, and when your cumulative payments reach the price of the full bundle (at time of purchase) you recieve a permanent licens, no more payments ever.

It’s the right instinct because the ownership destination makes the subscription feel different than pure rent. It feels good, I like that you’re building towards something.

Though a great idea, that model actually falls apart in this conversation.

Their full bundle is priced at $2,462, and the monthly subscription is $18. That’s a 137-month payoff 😆

Payoff Period (monthly) = Bundle Price / Monthly Rate
                        = $2,462 / $18
                        = ~137 months ≈ 11.4 years

Payoff Period (annual)  = $2,462 / $194/yr
                        = ~12.7 years

Let’s use industry-standard churn rates and say that, at a realistic 4–5% monthly churn rate, less than 1% of subscribers will reach full ownership.

Meaning the probability of completing 137 monthly payments looks like this:

P(completing at month n) = (1 − λ)^n

Where:
  n = payoff months (137 for Melda monthly)
  λ = monthly churn rate

At 4% monthly churn:  (0.96)^137 ≈ 0.004  →  ~0.4% of subscribers own it
At 5% monthly churn:  (0.95)^137 ≈ 0.001  →  ~0.1% of subscribers own it

The framing is honest, but the math makes no sense. Nobody is going to own these products this way, and honestly, as someone who was paying this for a while, I opted to start buying the plugins I wanted when they ran their “Eternal Madness” sales.

For this to actually serve producers and not just the finance department at Image line, aka Meldaproduction, the payoff timeline has to be realistic and human scale, think car lease, not mortgage.

The Hybrid Model That Actually Works

SO let’s say that I actually had the job I wanted at Akai, or at least a consulting position. Here’s a bit of the architecture I’d build if I were running their software/hardware strategy.

Layer 1 — Hardware Purchase = Permanent Core

Buying any MPC or Force above the entry level gains you a defined set of instruments and effects that are permanently licensed to you. NO subscription, no monthly, just yours that ships with the unit.

The tier would scale with hardware price:

• Force / MPC Live III ($1,699) → Core AIR FX Collection + MPC Instrument Collection permanently unlocked

• MPC XL ($2,899) → All of the above + full AIR Instrument Expansion Pack 3 + NI Play Series permanently unlocked

The software inclusion value at each tier is calculated against the hardware’s MSRP :

Hardware_Tier_Software_Value = MSRP_Bracket × Inclusion_Rate

Example:
  MPC Live III:  $1,699 MSRP × ~38% inclusion rate  →  ~$650 software value
  MPC XL:        $2,899 MSRP × ~34% inclusion rate  →  ~$999 software value

MPC Sample vs MPC XL: Which One Actually Belongs in Your Setup?

All right, what’s up, lab crew? So we’ve had the MPC sample for almost a week now. And here are our thoughts on it.

So, a few weeks back, we saw the MPC sample leak. And my immediate reaction was that a guy was creating something that would directly compete with ESP 404. I knew it, not for a fact per se, but a lot of these leaks are, honestly, more than likely driven by a Kai. But that’s just me speculating. I think it’s a great marketing strategy if that’s what they’re doing. But I didn’t feel threatened by it.

I was actually excited. I felt like, instead of the blip box, this could be an alternative standalone music production device for my 9-year-old. Personally, I’m not interested in it. I think that I am more of an MPCXL guy. I like having a richer feature set and the ability to edit individual tracks. However, I do see the advantage of this. I don’t think it necessarily replaces anything we already have in the studio. However, I do see that it can augment what you already have. But before we go into, you know, my final opinion, let’s look at what the MPC sample is and what it isn’t.

What the MPC Sample Actually Is (And Isn’t)

So, the MPC sample is a very compact mobile music production device that brings the fun back into music-making, keeping it simple. I think Akai has done a very good job of capturing the essence of building a musical loop, or just a musical phrase, and turning it into something complex, or enriching it with new ideas after new ideas after new ideas. The MPC sample lets you do that. You can record or load any sound you want.

Online debates often miss the purpose of the MPC sample. The MPC sample is a lower-tier offering. It’s something for a younger producer who may not have the money to invest in an MPCXL or an MPC Live Free. Somebody who wants something that’s gonna let them make music. But it doesn’t necessarily have to get in the way of the music-making process.

So, the MPC sample is something anyone can pick up and start using immediately. This isn’t for the veterans who have had every iteration of the MPC. It doesn’t mean you can’t go out and get one, but this device isn’t specifically designed for vets. This device is made for the purest, the hobbyists, the people who want to grab something and go, pretty much the same crowd as the SP 404, except not just to run samples through the vinyl emulation, right? This is definitely a beginner machine.

And honestly, I think it is a companion machine, probably something entirely different. There is a small part of this machine that I think people are completely overlooking, which I will get to later. But I think that this machine is something that you can use by itself if it’s your 1st time music production, or you could use it alongside an MPC to get ideas out when you’re hanging out with the kids on the couch or watching shows with your lady, and then take them and turn them into full-fledged songs later when you have the time.

And then I think it is something you can look at as a completely different way of making music today in 2026 that will still be relevant. I think if you want to look in that direction, DB Asi and his cola sampler are a great example of how you can make amazing-sounding music with very simple tools.

So what AKai says is it’s a sketch pad. And I kind of agree. I think it is a place where the existing MPC and a Kai Forge, MPC live, where 3 users can sketch out ideas, then go back to their larger machine to figure them out fully. And even for someone who hasn’t experienced the MPC ecosystem before. It’s a good idea just to be able to create something that isn’t generated by a machine. This is something you can sketch with a pencil and a piece of paper, rather than prompting something pretty cool. So I definitely agree that this is a sketch pad.

Where the MPC XL Still Wins

The MPCXL wins on features like track management and channel strips, which aren’t possible on the MPC sample. I like the filters as quick, but just off of compression and channel strip, and the number of tracks, it’s, it’s, it’s hands down. You beat it. It beats it on the RAM for your work on my particular workflow.

I use multiple instruments, and sometimes I bounce them down, or I’ll record into multiple audio tracks, whereas the MPC sample is very cut-and-dry: you have one track, everything’s on that track. Now, eventually, you can take it into the DAW and break it down into its individual components. But when you’re working on the MPC sample, you’re strictly creating, you’re strictly sketching, versus being on the MPC, you can sketch and fully develop your ideas and go from pre-production to post-production and completely finalize the track.

The XL can do more: control other instruments, route signals, and support plugins. The MPC sample can’t. You don’t have any channel strips. And I live by my air channel strip. So it would be impossible for me to rely on this completely.

So, for those of you who say the MPC sample is unnecessary. You’re right. I mean, if you’re looking at it from that critical aspect, where your current MPC wins, yeah, absolutely, you don’t need it.

Where the MPC Sample Has the XL Beat

Now, in areas where the sample wins are, I believe, where all of us find challenges, you know, for us MPC heads, most of us are growing. Most of us have families or responsibilities beyond just making music. And the MPC sample excels at making music and turning ideas you may have on the fly into songs really quickly. Let’s say, for example, you’re humming a melody in your head. You can actually record that through the microphone, quickly on the MPC sample, lay some drums down, and then later turn it into a fully fledged song.

Now, there’s been plenty of times when we’ve had to pull out our phones. Now, granted, the MPC sample isn’t small enough to just fit in your pocket. However, it is small enough that if you were somewhere and had a small bag, you could take her travel bag with you. You could pull the Sample out, get some ideas down, and turn those ideas into songs relatively quickly without disrupting much of what’s happening in your current scenario.

So depending on what you have going on, you know, your life, I know for me, sometimes I’m hanging out with my lady or watching my kids. I am away from my music gear, and I may have ideas that end up in voice memos that I have to come back to and then turn into something, rather than being able to do it right there in the moment and then finish that idea later. So, in a very practical sense, having the built-in microphone, speaker, and sequencing capabilities is definitely a game-changer and one of the benefits the Sample has over the MPCXL.

And when it comes to price, to be able to do that for 400 bucks is exceptional. If someone came to me and said, “ Hey, man, I have 500 bucks, and I’m looking at buying my 1st hardware machine, what should I get, you know, and they gave me between the,, teenage, engineering, TB -KO 33, or the,, The Roland 404. I’d say the MPC sample. If possible, I’d suggest saving for the XL or Akai Force. But for those on a budget who want to learn and maybe earn money, start with this: learn the MPC system, get familiar with hardware, and then move to a more advanced system. So I think $399 is a fair price for what you get. Akai is pretty much hitting the sweet spot.

Here’s My Honest Take on Akai’s Strategy

Now, here’s my take on this. Akai has released many products recently. I don’t think that they’re necessarily cannibalizing their own lineup with the MPC sample. However, I do think a Kai might end up vibe-coding their way into a situation where they’re feeding too many segments of their customer base. I think what ends up happening in that scenario is that you have a company making so many different products that there’s 0 continuity between them. And that is a major weakness that a Kai is going to have to figure out before they start bringing so many people into the ecosystem who are going to want, have so many demands, and a Kai is not in a position to solve them.

And vibe coding that might end up requiring you to completely change the entire product lineup, which you’re going to piss off customers who just spent $400 and now have to spend another $ 400. They may not be in that position yet. So you’ve got to be careful in bringing those customers in because those customers. At the same time, they are great for business, and they do look like angels initially, but they can ultimately become little tiny devils in your business if you don’t have all your ducks in a row. And as someone who’s a major Akai fan, Akai does not have its ducks in a row, especially when you have something this capable at 399.

The XL, costing almost 3 grand via aKai foForcean, completely blows both of those things out of the water, right in the middle, as a completely different offering. and a seven-year-old offering at that. I think aKai has some offerings that are all over the place and don’t necessarily fit their current value ladder. And to mention products like the MPK series or the Akai Advanced series keyboards that are not 100% compatible in terms of features, feature integration with either the MPC or the Akai Force. So, a kind needs to integrate their products better because their customers will be looking for ways to augment their current setups. And if they don’t have that ability to use the features currently on all Akai products, Akai customers are going to be frustrated with their purchases because they’re going to have $300, $400 bricks sitting at home, like me.

How I’d Use Both Together

All right. So, here’s how I’d use both of these together.
Let’s say I get the MPC sample and want to make a track with my daughter. Well, of course, I want to load up some of my favorite drum sounds, but I also want her to pick some. So we can either go to BandLab or find some good, legal, free drum wherever. And then, of course, start making an idea.

Nah, of course, now she’s going to have bedtime, and I have daddy time, so I can take that track that we both made. And then completely augment that with my new instruments, or my full instruments, on the XL or the Force. And so I think one of the 1st things you do when you open the sample project in Excel is try to split each of those sounds into its own track, which I don’t know how it’s going to work yet. I have not seen anyone convert a sample track to an XL track. So if you have that, please drop the link in the comments, because I haven’t seen anyone who’s done that.

I think that this is a fully capable device. I think that even in that scenario, if we make a reasonable track, I think that it’s totally plausible that you can take whatever you make on the MPC sample and turn that into a full track. I think we’re in the days now where if the music sounds good, it sounds good. We’re outside of the loudness wars. We are in the streaming wars, we are in the attention wars, and you’re in a place now where your music can be heard, no matter who your audience is. So you don’t necessarily have to spend all the time mixing everything down. If you’ve made something in the Sample that sounds amazing and you want to run with it, I think you can run with it 1000%.

It’s something that’s going to Force you to do what you need to do to recoup your investment in your music.

Otherwise, I would say that there are 2 very capable devices that you can have a lot of fun making music on. And my question for you is: are you more of a hobbyist, or are you pursuing your passion while also trying to be compensated? I want to know. I want to know where my audience lies.

All right,

so what’s our take on the MPC sample? Well, for years, producers have whined and complained and hollered and moaned about the converters and the sound on the MPC, and it didn’t sound like the old vintage MPCs. So finally, Akai has given these producers exactly what they’re asking for, something that competes and that offers the features of those exact MPCs in a price range that fits exactly where those producers are today.

Ultimately, this device is something that I am considering getting for my nine-year-old daughter. Why? Because I think it’s a great introduction into the NPC family, and I think it’s a super user-friendly way to start creating their own music, especially sampling their own sounds.

For example, I saw her struggling with an idea she had in bringing it to fruition inside a van lab. But the simple loop she had made in sampling her sister. If she had done this on the NPC, I feel like she would have been quickly making music in a matter of minutes, rather than struggling with the software, in order to just create something cool.

So I think this is a great introductory machine for people who are looking to create beats and start expressing their ideas musically. really quickly. Right. For people who are looking for something that is... retro and sounds vintage, and gives you the feel of the older NPCs.

Today, Spotify made new comments, prompting me to give context on why I believe Spotify could become obsolete, though streaming as a whole may not.

Okay, to set the stage, I was recently listening to David Senra’s Founders podcast, and on episode 391, Jimmy Iovine actually says this:

And he’s right. Streaming services have struggled financially. Most have thin profit margins and aren’t making much money ( remember the sale of Tidal?). Let’s look at this from a 30,000ft perspective. Global music streaming revenue reached over $17 billion in 2023, yet Spotify reported an operating loss that year. This shows that even as the overall pie grows, standalone platforms still find long-term profitability out of reach (IFPI Global Music Report, 2024).

And Jimmy is right, the streaming model only fits companies like Apple, Amazon, and Google, whose music services don’t need to be highly profitable or even profitable at all. Amazon uses music to incentivize Prime membership, Apple uses it to help sell iPhones, and Google leverages music to support its platforms. Standalone companies like Spotify face far greater challenges, they simply have no ‘what else’ or other offer. .

and subsequently ,when the platform’s margins are structurally squeezed, guess who gets squeezed first.

The artist.

I’ve probably read a thousand think pieces on this, commenting on the artist or the ultimate struggle between platform and creator. I want to offer some perspective.

Now let’s look at exactly what streaming is, why it exists, and why artists believe they need streaming.

Streaming lets users access music over the internet without owning files or physical copies. It differs from buying music, as you pay for continual access rather than a one-time purchase.

Streaming is provided by a music or digital distribution platform that hosts millions of songs on servers and lets people listen on demand, rather than buying physical copies like vinyl or CDs.

This represents a much bigger shift in the music marketplace.

The shift from ownership to access-based consumption.

Why Streaming Took Over the Music Industry

The idea behind streaming was to create a win-win ecosystem by benefiting both creators and consumers. However, in reality, while some artists gain significant advantages, others receive far less, depending on their role within the system.

Consumers benefit first.

For consumers, streaming provides essentially unlimited access.

A flat monthly subscription gives you access to millions of songs instead of having to buy each CD or album individually.

Back in the early 2000s, a single CD could cost around twenty dollars. (CD Prices To Drop, 2003)

Streaming today provides dramatically more value for a fraction of the price.

and simultaneously music discovery has also changed, completely.

Instead of being limited to a store’s stock, we now can discover music instantly via curated playlists, personalized algorirthms and what’s trending.

Streaming also solved another major problem the music industry faced at the time.

Piracy.

Services like Kazaa and Limewire had already changed consumer behavior. Music was easy, fast, and illegally free. Streaming provided a legal alternative that was easier than piracy and faster than retail.

and since convenience beats theft.

And the industry survived because of it.

The Hidden Economics Behind Streaming Platforms

So, that’s how consumers benefit.

But how do the platforms benefit?

According to Source Bridge, one key advantage is the predictability of revenue. With subscription models, companies can more accurately forecast monthly income based on the number of subscribers and the fees they collect.

Streaming companies also collect vast amounts of user data.

This data allows platforms to create recommendation systems and personalized playlists that keep listeners engaged.

As an artist, this is a moment to ask:

Spotify’s model depends on owning and controlling user data and behavior, so consider how you can build your own version of this advantage.

Here are some straightforward ways to take control of your own fan data right now: start by building an email list with tools like Mailchimp or ConvertKit; collect emails at shows, on your website, or via social media links. Send out short surveys to your fans to learn about their interests and what kind of content they want from you. Use direct messages on social media to engage your listeners one-on-one, and ask questions that help you understand who your most dedicated fans really are. Consider using tools like Google Forms or Typeform for gathering feedback and preferences.

When you have this data, you can personalize your content, offer special releases, or invite your most loyal fans to pre-sales or exclusive events. This is incredibly valuable.

But there’s a major catch.

Why Apple, Amazon, and Google Can Win at Streaming

Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music operate under a completely different model than Spotify.

Music is not their core business.

Now let’s talk about the royalty system.

Most streaming services use a pro-rata model.

Think of it like a giant jar.

All subscription money goes into the jar.

All streams go into the jar.

At the end of the month, Artists are paid based on their percentage of total streams.

Meaning if you get a large number of plays, then you get a large check

Subsequently, larger artists capture the majority of the revenue.

Even if a listener never plays those artists.

Imagine paying eleven dollars a month and only listening to your favorite local band.

Your subscription still contributes to the global revenue pool dominated by major artists.

And this brings us back to the bigger picture.

The music industry has long known that music itself is not the primary profit center.

Jimmy Iovine knew this.

Major labels knew this.

Executives like Lyor Cohen knew this.

Music has often functioned as a marketing engine for other revenue streams.

Sometimes we’re so hyper-focused on creating the music that we overlook what actually draws people in to listen for the first time. That’s where loss leaders come in—they are accessible, valuable offerings you put out into the world to pull people into your orbit and introduce them to the music itself. Loss leaders matter because they lower the initial barrier for new fans, create memorable moments, and give listeners a reason to connect with your broader creative work. To make this easier, think of loss leaders in three simple categories:

1. Experiences: Host a low-cost house show or pop-up listening party, maybe even paired with food or a small art showing. For example, playing a free acoustic set at a local coffee shop can attract new ears and create a personal connection.

2. Content: Share engaging videos, launch a podcast episode discussing your music journey, or post behind-the-scenes footage from a recent recording session. For example, a series of stories on social media that document your songwriting process offers fans something special and invites them into your world.

Netflix will eventually face similar pressure.

It may look stable from the outside, but these models are more fragile than most realize.

The other day we posted about Native Instruments’ insolvency, and they actually responded. Their reply wasn’t particularly reassuring.

It raises a bigger question: given what’s happening to Native Instruments, is hardware actually the smarter option moving forward in music production?

Let’s break this down.

The Risk of Software-Dependent Hardware

Native Instruments also makes hardware, but it’s deeply tied to their software ecosystem. That means any company that acquires NI would likely need to take on both the hardware and the software.

From a business standpoint, software is generally easier and cheaper to maintain than hardware. If NI has to cut costs, the hardware side could very well be what gets scaled back—or eliminated altogether.

If that happens, users are left at the mercy of whoever buys the company. A new owner could discontinue the hardware entirely, leaving you dependent on software alone. So even “hardware” that is heavily integrated with software still carries risk.

Where the MPC Differs

The MPC ecosystem is also hardware-software integrated, but there’s a crucial difference: you don’t actually need a computer to use most MPCs.

Some newer models function more like controllers, but the core of the MPC line remains self-contained. You can make full productions directly on the hardware itself.

If we compare this to modern workstations like the Fantom or the Montage/MODX, they already function like hybrid DAWs: multi-track recording, audio tracks, MIDI tracks, and built-in instruments. In many ways, they give you similar creative power to a computer-based DAW.

We haven’t really seen a major DAW disappear in the modern era—but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen.

The Problem of Licensing and Activations

When a company gets acquired, it isn’t just hardware that can change. Licensing and activation systems can change too.

Maybe a company shifts from iLok to a proprietary system, or vice versa. Maybe they introduce new installers that don’t work well with your current OS. Suddenly, your tools still exist—but your workflow is disrupted.

Personally, I like being fully integrated within one ecosystem. If I’m using Ableton, I mostly use Ableton instruments. If I’m in an Akai ecosystem, I prefer staying inside of it for consistency of sound and workflow.

If NI assets get split across multiple companies, that could mean:

• One installer for Fabric XL

• A different activation for A-Strings

• Another system for Kontakt

It’s not the end of the world, but it’s friction—especially for producers who value a streamlined setup.

Why Hardware Offers Real Longevity

If you go the hardware route, you don’t have to worry about activations. The instrument is already there, fully functional the moment you power it on.

Even when modern hardware has software features, companies can choose to unlock or permanently enable them if they discontinue support—similar to how some gaming platforms have handled old controllers or devices after shutting down services.

With hardware, you’re buying built-in longevity.

It’s also inherently modular. I can use a Prophet today, a Fantom tomorrow, an Iridium the next day, or a Waldorf Micro Q whenever I want. All of these can coexist in the same project, especially when routed through an MPC.

With recent updates, the MPC now supports:

• 16 audio tracks

• 32 software instrument tracks

That’s serious production power entirely within hardware.

There are still people in 2026 making music on MPC 2000s and 3000s. I genuinely believe that 50 years from now, people will still be using the Akai Force, MPC Live 2, and similar machines.

As long as you have access to an electronics repair technician, your hardware can outlive most software ecosystems.

Software vs. Hardware Sound

Right now, a huge amount of software is literally trying to emulate hardware.

What you’re really paying for with software is convenience—not necessarily authenticity. That doesn’t mean you can’t make incredible digital music, but there is a subtle difference between analog circuitry and digital algorithms.

Anyone who has spent time with real analog gear can feel that nuance.

Creativity, Skill, and Constraint

Using hardware requires more intention and skill. You can’t just drag and drop MIDI files endlessly or rely purely on presets.

But that constraint can actually make you more creative.

With modern MPCs, MIDI devices, Eurorack, pedals, and tools like the Hologram Microcosm, hardware setups can push you into more experimental, organic, and unpredictable territory—often in ways software struggles to replicate.

Native Instruments’ situation isn’t the end of the world—but it is a wake-up call.

It might be time to revisit some of the older, more foundational production skills—the ones that don’t depend on a subscription, an activation server, or a company’s financial stability.

Hardware may not be the only answer, but it offers something software never fully can: independence.

A staple in the music production community, Native Instruments has been a bedrock of digital music production for the better part of three decades. Their financial woes send shockwaves through the currently delicate ecosystem of professional music producers and software developers.

But have no fear, their failures aren’t an isolated market fluctuation, nor is it influenced by the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. It’s in fact a terminal consequence of aggressive private equity-led consolidation and unsustainable debt accrual (not to mention a profound alienation of user needs)

The German Context: Legal Realities of Preliminary Insolvency

SO to fully understand where Native Instruments is in its insolvency proceedings, we need to understand what exactly preliminary insolvency is. If you’re American, the presumption may be that they are in ‘bankruptcy’; however, the mechanisms behind insolvency work a bit differently in Germany. Insolvency is a proceeding designed to give a company some ‘breathing space’, essentially allowing it to sell valuable assets and restructure the company so it can keep operating and satisfy creditors. So, for those of you who are worried about your existing products, this means the lights aren’t quite out on your Kontakt banks.

Foundations of Innovation: The Native Instruments Arc (1996–2018)

You cannot understand what happened in 2026 without first acknowledging the company’s history. Founded in 1996 by Stephan Schmitt and Volker Hinz, Native Instruments was one of the first pioneers of the 'soft-synths' or 'virtual instruments'. This personal connection to Native Instruments' pioneering technology made the company's early innovations feel like a shared journey for many in the music community.

Throughout the early 200s Native Instruments introduced three core product lines: Kontakt, Maschine, and Traktor. Kontakt quickly became an industry standard sampler and rompler, subsequently creating a massive secondary market of third-party developers building libraries for the platform. Due to the massive moat of libraries and capabilities, they gave companies like East West a run for their money.

However, the seeds of this current crisis were planted in the transition from an engineering/production-led culture focused on innovation to one centered around financial spreads and scaling. In 2017, the Munich-based investment firm EMH-Partners acquired a significant minority stake in the company, signaling a shift toward aggressive growth strategies aimed at maximizing short-term returns and facilitating an early exit for its investors. This shift introduced a new set of incentives that diverged from founder-led goals, emphasizing quick profitability over sustained user-driven development. The agency costs involved, where the interests of new investors didn't align with those who built the company, contributed to later organizational turmoil and a departure from the company's original cultural ethos.
While this is no new trend, as companies like Akai and AVID were bought out by Inmusic, the DNA of a company’s ownership determines so much of the outcomes.

The Strategic Pivot: The 2019 Restructuring and Leadership Crisis

In late 2019, Native Instruments simultaneously announced a “One Native” strategy, which involved the layoff of 100 employees and a company focus on digital platform and subscription-based revenue.

In 2020, co-founder Daniel Haver and President Mate Galic stepped down providign some vague insight into rumored internal turmoil. Their departure marked the end of the visionary era of Native Instruments.

Private Equity Debt Trap: The Francisco Partners, The Soundwide Experiment

The Francisco Partners acquired a majority stake in 2021 and introduced a buy-and-build strategy. Their goal was to acquire complementary audio brands and integrate them into a conglomerate (similar to inmuic). This led to the merger with iZotope in 2022. Their new parent company, Soundwide, quickly expanded to acquire Plugin Alliance and Brainworx, quickly creating a portfolio of over 200 plugins.

SO essentially, after buying every VST possible, they still didn’t know what to do with them and had acquired a massive amount of debt (sounds like a lot of producers we know). As their expansion was funded through debt, global interest rates also rose significantly from 2020 to 2024, which caused the cost of servicing these loans to increase drastically and cannibalize their total operating budget. In 2020, central banks responded to the global economic conditions by maintaining lower interest rates to stimulate growth. However, by 2024, with inflationary pressures rising, these rates climbed, tightening cash flows for companies heavily reliant on debt. This shift in monetary policy further exacerbated Soundwide's financial woes, reflecting broader economic forces in play.

Brand Erosion

Adding fuel to the fire, Soundwide decided that a reduction in costs and expenses would be the best solution, which led to a significant slowdown in innovation and customer support. For instance, the company's research and development spending reportedly decreased by 25%, directly impacting their ability to roll out new features and updates at the previous pace. Not to mention, the name "Soundwide" did not resonate with customers.

Eventually, they rebranded and stuck with Native Instruments; however, this was in name only. The previous company has gone. through their various restructuring attemptis theyve let go amost 30% of their global workforce.

They essentially fried themselves and were banking on us trusting the Navite instruments’ good name. So if you’ve been frustrated with the lack of innovation from ANavite instruments, here’s why.

So currently Native Instruments’ value lies in their proprietary software platformas which, some of which have become the infrastructure of the music industry.

1. Kontakt and Reaktor: this includes the libraries and the heart of the NI synthesis engine.

2. iZotope Ozone & RX: Though purchased assets there are indispensable for mastering and post production

3. Traktor & Maschine: These combine hardware and software; their direct rivals (MPC and Pioneer) are currently owned by inmusic.

More than likely, these assets may be unbundled during the insolvency process, meaning in theory purchase Traktor under Pioneer and Maschine under Akai, or hopefully Kontakt (but that's wishful thinking)

The Failed 2025 Acquisition: Bridgepoint and Bain Capital

Last year, the European Commission approved the acquisition of Native Instruments by the UK Bridgepoint Group Holding and Bain Capital Credit. However, despite regulatory clearance, the deal apparently fell through. This hints at potential discrepencies aor deeper liabilities uncovered during the due diligence process. Perhaps the rising cost of debt made the acquisition terms unworkable for the two companies. But the fact that the company failed for insolvency just weeks after this deal failed indicates that Frnasicco Partners were completely out of option sor capital to inject into the company and were completely relying on the sale for survival.

Impact on Customers: The “Native Access” Crisis and Subscription Fatigue

So, for the average user, what does this mean?

The instructions for the NI 360 subscription service were met with some serious opposition. The major complaint was that the company was focusing on recurring revenue models while its core products and installers were becoming increasingly unstable. Repeated sync errors or infinite setup loops combined with discontinuation and miraculous reappearance (with just a new skin) of products like Absynth 5 led to a significant trust deficit amongst customers. "I spent hours trying to get past an endless setup loop," tweeted one frustrated producer. "Feels like they care more about subscriptions than the usability of their products." And that leads to their discontinuation paradox.

They could also break the company up at auction. This is the more likely of the scenarios. The administrator will sell individual assets or units to the highest bidders to satisfy creditors. This would effectively be the end of the unified ecosystem bout would save the individual tools by moving them to more stable companies.

The guitar center model is the last option. There is a possible option that the debt is restructured in a way that allows the brand to continue under a debt for equity swap, thought his would further stifle innovation and ultimately ruin the brand for customers.

The insolvency at Native Instruments is a landmark example of how private equity dynamics can destabilize the creative industry infrastructure. Essentially whle their software is currently functional, the long-term support and development for these tools is now in the hands of a cour appointed officla whos primary duty is to the creditors, not the community, builtyby NAtive Instruments, not the producers, not the music makers.

This crisis serves as another stark reminder that in the age s of AI and digital creative tools, the software that we rely on is not just a musical instrument, but a complex financial asset subject to the volatile forces of global markets and private equity maneuvers.

The promise was simple and seductive:

“Ethically Sourced AI Music.”

Shout out to Shawdi P, and Weaver beats for exposing one of the biggest scams to hit the music producer community since Timbaland’s beat club. While not related, there’s a bit of congruency between the types of characters that align themselves with the 'this benefits the producer community’ ideal and somewhat ambiguous origin companies they are aligned with.

While we typically don’t do this type of content, it’s ever more important to stay abreast of what can potentially affect all areas of the producer community.

While the music industry is seemingly at war with AI companies and machine learning, behind the scenes, they may be creating pathways for profit, potentially endangering the sovereignty of artists and their creations. While certain companies thrive on massive catalogues readily available for pennies on the dollar, or even free in some cases, OpenBeat AI steps in as the proverbial “good guy” to save the day. Or so we thought.

They touted themselves as “ethically trained” and even brought on spokespeople or creative directors like MyGuyMars to build rapport with the community, stating the model was trained using his “chords, drums, and musical emotion”. Marketing themselves as the safer alternative to Suno, they touted no shady scraping, no mystery database or dataset, no lawsuits, just “ethical AI” using a clean interface with an on-time, lifetime license.

This was the perfect pitch for beatmakers/producers who

• find it unethical to steal or train AI models on artists who haven’t consented or are not being compensated

• Don’t trust the current AI copyright madness

• want to experiment with AI tools without affecting their reputation or personal values.

But unfortunately, as we’ve learned this week (and maybe too many times before), if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is just a cash grab for a relatively successful artist and a wrapper for Suno.

We stumbled upon this story simply following another story, which was controversial in itself. Apparently, there are a few creators who are a bit less than liberal when disclosing they are promoting products as part of paid partnerships. Big shoutout to Weaver beats, as during his research on the topic, he apparently discovered what Shawdi P discovered a few days prior.

Apparently, Openbeat AI was never “ethically trained”; in fact, they may not have any method to ‘train’ their ‘AI’ at all. According to multiple technical breakdowns, community investigations, and simple inspect page checking on your browser, OpenBeat AI is simply a front-end website that quietly passes your prompts to Suno using an unofficial API service or API.box method and repackages the Suno output back to you at their current markup.

You’ve pretty much got the gist of it; however, there’s more nuance and a deeper level of discovery and analysis to be had. So sit back, enjoy yourself, this is the full stoyr of how a ‘revoluationary’ “patent pending’ tool was exposed as a deceptive middleman, deceiving not only the users, the promoters but potentially even any investors into the compnay, the creators caught in the crossfire and why this cocoughany should permanently change how you approach using AI tools as a producer.

🕵️ The Whistleblowers: Shawdi P & Weaver Beats

While it’s true that Weaver Beats lit the charge and blew the lid for the wider producer community, the charge was set elsewhere. To keep it honest and give credit where credit is due, Shawdi P The Plug was the first canary in the coal mine who carried the dynamite in his tiny little beak, setting the charge for anyone who may have stumbled upon his humble work.

A few days before this expose took off, Shawdi actually dropped a video digging into Openbeats’ TOS and marketing promises on his channel. In his video “The HUGE Problem With AI Music | Openbeat.AI and “I EXPOSED Openbeat.AI (And They Responded), he identifies the core contradiction of the service. Openbeat publicly brands itself as ethically trained, while its TOS quietly pushes all copyright liability onto the end user and openly admits that its generations may resemble copyrighted works.

The front page pitch:

• “Ethically trained AI”

• “We own our data.”

• “Safe to release.”

The Terms of Service:

• You (the user) are responsible for any copyright infringement

• Your uploads can be used and reused by the platform (and possibly its partners)

• Generations may resemble existing copyrighted works

If you truly own your API, tightly control your data, and ethically train your models, you don’t have to throw your users under the legal bus. Credit is due where credit is due; Shawdi P is the first one to say the quiet parts out loud.

Then came Weaver Beats.

Working with a Discord user name FEX and other community members, weaver dove into the technical side instead. In Weaver’s coverage, he walks through simple page inspect logs and network callbacks to show that Openbeat wasn’t actually generating anything locally or on their servers. In fact, the prompts were actually being sent through an external service known as an API box. The said API box was actually Suno’s servers, where the file was generated and then relayed back to Openbeat AI.

In plain English:

You thought you were using OpenBeat.AI, but in fact, you were using Suno through OpenBeat with an unofficial (potentially unauthorized) Suno API. Your ethical track was not ethical at all, rather a Suno creation labeled as Openbeats baby.

And Weaver wasn’t the only one to confirm this; multiple Reddit forums, as even DJ Pain1 himself, and Openbeat, through a public statement, confirmed that Openbeat was using a Suno API through API box.

🧩 How the Scheme Actually Worked (So You Don’t Fall For It Again)

Let’s step back and analyse this for a second, like gain-staging: Step by step, so we can really understand what’s going on.

1. You notice that AI is inevitably permeating the market, and not wanting to be out of the loop, or seem like a dinosaur, or simply from pure curiosity, you’re interested in how you can incorporate AI into your current music-making. Perhaps you’ve even heard a few good AI songs and believe in the technology as long as it’s trained ethically, which at this point may be incredibly difficult.

2. Along comes a company promising everything you’ve been concerned about

   1. You see the YouTube/Instagram ads with terms like ‘ethically sourced’, ‘better than Suno’, ‘No subscription’, ‘lifetime access’, ‘safe to release on Spotify.’

   2. Influencers you believe in and trust who have the same values as you support, use, and recommend the product. "(DJ Pain 1, Ave McRee, BOLO) and are offering promo codes to support their channel while showing how the model uses user input to create astonishing results.

3. You decide to give it a shot, you sign up for an account, briefly skim the TOS (if that), and start creating with a few free credits they offer.

   1. You upload original stems or record your vocals and melodies into the software.

4. Unbeknownst to you, the scam has been going on since before step one, but with your input, Openbeat forwards your ‘request’ to an unofficial wrapper, which connects your prompt to Suno’s backend.

   1. Instead of Openbeat doing any work, they simply allow Suno to do all the heavy lifting, and Suno generates an audio file.

   2. That audio file is then returned directly to Openbeat in a matter of minutes and saved on Openbeat’s servers.

5. After a few moments of waiting, you’ve finally got your output. Openbeat hands you a regifted package they got from Suno as your brand-new Christmas gift. It’s wrapped in a nice ethical wrapper, and you feel good that you haven’t contributed to the firestorm of copyright infringement that is the company Suno.

This is why this hits a little differently than a normal API integration. Sure, they can utilize another company’s API; they even disclose this inside their TOS.

They seemingly are doing what should be done when using a public API.

• Being transparent about it,

• Respecting the terms

• And being honest about not having their own proprietary model

But OpenBeat is actually doing the exact OPPOSITE of every one of these ideals.

They aren’t being transparent about what API’s they are using; in fact, they are publicly positioning themselves as the ethical alternative when, in fact, they essentially ARE Suno. The quintessential bait and switch.

They tout ‘patent pending’ on their site, but how can you be patent pending while primarily utilizing a public API, let alone Suno’s, which is actually patent pending?

⚖️ The “Ethical” Lie: Why The Suno Connection Matters

I’m sure you may be saying to yourself, “But why does this even matter?” AI is inevitable, and people use public API’s all the time.

Well, to understand why the producer community is in such an uproar, you’ve got to zoom out and look at the bigger legal war around AI-generated music.

Flashback to June 2024, the RIAA (on behalf of Sony, Universal, and Warner sued Suno and Udio, alleging they trained their machine learning systems on massive catalogues of copyrighted recordings without permission

Resemble AI+1

According to the accusations and follow-up filings, Suno and Udio:

• Copied ‘decades’ worth of commercial recordings to train their models

• When prompted with certain cues, generate tracks that strongly resemble or imitate human artists and songs

• bypassed YouTube’s protections by ripping audio from streams to circumvent DMCA

And Suno does not deny training their models on copyrighted music. In court and in public commentary, they lean heavily on a ‘fair use’ defense.

At the same time as the lawsuit, the reality around the music business is shifting.

• Warner Music settled its lawsuit with Suno, flipping it into a licensing partnership with plans for licensed AI models to debut in 2026

• Artists are filing class action lawsuits, testing different angles, and including right-of-publicity and vocal likeness.

From the legal standpoint, the question still lingers: is Suno’s machine learning technology ‘ethical’? While there isn’t a clear yes or no answer yet, here’s what is clear.

• The fact that Suno’s training practices are actively contested by rights holders, including artists, publishers, and labels, is significant.

• Multiple lawsuits have claimed their methods are essentially copyright infringement and exploitative to the artists.

• Any model built on scraped catalogs without the express consent of or compensation to the copyright holder should not be labeled ‘ethically sourced.’

So that brings us back to OpenBeat:

Their entire USP was “we are not Suno,” “We are the alternative to all that grey area nonsense,” “We’re trained on in-house musicians and licensed session.”

With that as your core promise, you don’t get to quietly plug into Suno, the very model at the center of the controversy, and sell it as a makeup as ‘safe’.

That's a direct lie.

THAT is why people are calling it a scam

It’s not just a tech oops or misunderstanding of how API’s work.

📉 Collateral Damage: Producers, Rights, and Real-World Risk

Not everyone is in an uproar about this; however, those who take offense are pretty vocal about it, with the loudest reactions online about hurt feelings, infighting, ‘who’s fake’, and ‘ who to trust’. While melodramatic seeming, their outcries have some validity.

1. Distribution risk

   1. If you release OpenBeat/Suno-generated tracks to Spotify or other streaming platforms, you may be bound by distributor TOS that assume you’ve cleared the rights to the music. If Suno’s training is ruled an infringement in the future, your catalogue is at risk of being flagged, frozen, or quietly taken down from the services.

2. Contractual Risk

   1. Consider if you’re signed to a label like Warner Music, they could have clauses in your recording contract about using unlicensed samples or third-party generators. Especially those of which they are not in bed with. Using an “Ethical AI” which turns out ot be a thin layer over controversial and disputed technology puts you in breach of contract territory, not the company that sold you the subscription.

3. Data Risks

   1. Uploading unreleased stems to AI tools is already sketchy territory. Doing so into a black box wrapper that essentially sends the most sensitive parts of your music into a third-party data pool that you never consented to leads to a completely different level of recklessness. Several aspects of the TOS indicate that your uploads can and potentially will be used to improve the service, but what service? Openbeat, Suno, or Both?

4. Reputational Risk

   1. In this moment, when producers and artists are becoming more wary of the source of their creations, you can use DJ Pain 1 and Timbaland as a study for how quickly your reputation can go from being a G.O.A.T. or ‘trusted educator’ to sleezebag for simply aligning oneself to the ‘wrong side’ of artists’ interests.

This is bigger than picking plugins, or choosing samples, or even a recently controversial topic, using loops sourced from overseas producers. Inevitably, you’re choosing a legal position, one that may or may not stand on the side of creators like yourself

🎙️ The Fallout: The Creator Apology Tour (and the Ones Who Opted Out)

So now that we understand how this ‘scam’ worked and the risks associated with it, we dive into the fallout (which, as of this writing, is still kindof happening)

Weavers exposed forced almost every major influencer who promoted OpenBeat in the hip hop/beatmaking ecosphere to say something.

Starting with the most accountability taken by a producer is

DJ Pain 1: The Accountable

In all fairness, DJ Pain is probably the most difficult producer to listen to, not for lack of great content, just for being monotone and uploading exceptionally raw, unedited videos. Unfortunately, he took the biggest reputational hit because his brand is essentially the producer’s advocate, teacher, and doesn't get screwed by the system mentor. While originally an expose on undisclosed or minimally disclosed advertising on YouTube, DJ Pain also found himself dead center for promoting the Suno-generated Openbeat AI tracks.

After being mentioned in the ‘expose’, DJ Pain quickly uploaded a video that took accountability for his role in promoting something that wasn’t what was advertised to the public or influencers.

• He explicitly says he promoted a service that was likely not ethically trained.

• Provided proof that Openbeat AI misled him, even after he expressed his concerns with the ethics around AI training models

• Apologized to his supporters and the producer community at large without minimizing his role in the situation

• Frames his mistake as a hard-earned lesson in doing better due diligence before co-signing AI platforms.

In one of his later videos, “OpenBeat AI Just Responded: Are They Using Sun?”, he walks through evidence of the companies’ shifting statements, including their quiet removal of the “ethically trained’ language from their site. Further putting the company in the fire.

Ranking his accountability, we’d call this a 9/10.

This is what accountability looks like. There are no ‘if you were offended’ statements, just a simple “I got it wrong, for that I’m sorry, here’s what I missed, and I’m looking to do better, going forward, here is what I’ll do differently.”

To make this a 10/1,0, we believe he should have done a bit more work or reached out to Weaver or Shawdi P directly to find a way to replicate this in his first video.

Busyworks Beats: The “Pragmatic”

Busyworks ‘ approach was more akin to a businessman caught in bed with a reputationally bad partner; would they continue in the partnership if no one knew?

In his livestreams and eventual video “Open Letter to OpenBeat. AI he

• Looks past their longstanding feud and gives credit to WeaverBeats for a brilliant investigation into this company

• Acknowledges that his platform drove users toward a deceptive product (though not focusing too much on the ‘ethical’ portion of the deception)

• Calls out the bait and switch tactics of advertising, of throwing rocks at the enemy and secretly serving their interests using terms like advertising “organic beef” while secretly serving “factory-farm-mystery meat.”

• Deletes or unlists his Openbeat AI content to stop funneling new people into the system.

While Busyworks Beats’ response lacks the affect of DJ Pain, the accountability is there; he relies on “This wasn’t transparent, and I can’t stand behind it.”

We give this accountability rating an 8/10

WHile Busy was accountable, Rather than spend the better part of an hour erroneously trying to compare a 128kbps mp3 file downloaded from Beatstarst to a wav file he produced in his DAW in an effort to prove Beatstars has AI generated tracks on the top 10 (which shouldnt be a problem since he continually uses Suno in particular during his content ) he could have focused more on the accountablity aspect and his role in leading users towards a service that he already recommends during his livestream.

Ave Mcree: The defensive, the nuanced, the completely erroneous

Ave Mcrees’ “The Truth about OpenBeat and Suno AI & My Apology” sits directly in the middle of accountability and defensiveness. While he does issue an apology, a lot of his argument centers on what his intent was and being ‘compensated’ for his promotion

• Ave emphasizes that he wasn’t paid by Openbeat and in fact reached out to them first… to promote their product … for free.

• He frames his use of the tool as purely experimental and driven by curiosity, though also claiming in previous videos that AI sampling would be his go-to method to avoid getting his videos taken down. Especially using services like “soundraw.”

• He expresses regret that his content may have misled people, but also pushes back on the premise that he was complicit.

Honestly, without making any direct accusations, here is the reality behind Aves’ accountability.

Rating = 4/10 .. Not quite complete bullshit

Having posted several tracks using the service, it seems that Ave was more frustrated with being involved in the controversy than he was about OpenBeat being a wrapper for Suno.

Ave has repeatedly promoted OpenBeat on his channel in addition to other controversial products aimed at producers.

Ave also erroneously tries to explain what an API is and how that is technically not unethical, which honestly would lead to a further decrease in his rating, the longer we write about him.

At the very opposite end of the spectrum is BOLO

BOLO Da Producer: The Unapologetic/ I make beats on my channel with whatever I like, so what?

But we kindof already knew this.

On his livestream “OpenBeat.AI Situation is Weird” and later discussion/interviews, his attitude fluctuates from basically :

• I use cool tools to make beats. OpenBeat is one of them

• I’m not losing sleep over what they do with their business

• The producer community loves drama too much, and I’m not playing into it

I do also find it ironic, however, that he chose to single someone out in his livestream who was talking shit and on Weaver Beats live chat asked numerous questions about the usage of AI rather than make statements or provide context, which seemed rather off topic.

To his credit, after being invited to a conversation with Weaver, BOLO adamantly says that he will not be vetting companies any more than he already is and that he doesn’t have the time to rather than focus on the music production aspect.

His position is that if he sees something that he likes, that’s dope, he’s gonna make beats with it. Which is understandable, to a degree, but here is where BOLO fails to see who he is and what his role is.

BOLO touts his streaming numbers due to his role in the song “Whip/Nae Nae?” and that he doesn’t need to do YouTube videos. BUT he’s still in talks with companies to do just that. So to some degree, the channel is important to the business that is BOLO Da Producer.

What makes it possible to do tutorials, interviews, deep dives, and criticisms that people are interested in watching is this certified credibility. Way fewer people would care without a smash single like “Whip/ Nae Nae”. So, for the people who watch and trust his advice, you've inadvertently led them into the potential traps that we described before. All while saying, “People don’t really know how the legal stuff works when it comes to music.”

Again, the take is based, but like his livestream, he’s seemingly talking out of both ends, and the accountability is nonexistent. Fortunately for what he lacks in accountability, he makes up in perceived amiability.

Accountability rating 1/10: This MF just doesn’t care

Larry Ohh: Apology on top of Apology on top of Apology

While writing this post, Larry Ohh drops a video apologizing over and over again for misleading his community, drops multiple free packs from his archive (with ZERO opt-in in just a straight drop link), offers a course for free, and everything.

Accountability Level 9/10 Could’ve done more sooner, but great job.

🤝🏽 Influence, Money, and the New Due Diligence

This situation isn't just about one company; it’s more of a case study in how quickly misleading or false marketing tactics can blow up in a company’s face, AND how quickly an “ethical” AI brand can be sussed out.

• As it currently stands, there is a legal vacuum around training data

• Producers are looking for safe shortcuts to making great music quickly

• Influencers are under enormous pressure to keep up and be a part of the next big thing, to keep the attention of their audiences

More uncomfortable truths:

• If you’re an influencer, “I didn’t read the Terms of Service” is the lamest defense, and is not excusable anymore. At this juncture, ethics matter. Great businesspeople care if their partners are cheating.

• If you’re a producer, “But they said it was ethical” won’t cut it or even matter to your distributor, your clients, or a judge. YOU are responsible for what you put your name on.

• “Wrapper services” are super common in SaaS and AI; however, the ethics depend solely on disclosure. Using API’s is 100% okay and normal; however, using an API and calling it your own ‘Patent Pending"‘ proprietary “ethically trained model” is not.

We’ve surpassed the point where you can treat AI tools like cracked VSTs. These are legal objects in the landscape now.

🧭 What “Ethical AI” Should Actually Mean (Checklist for Producers)

So where do we go from here?

Well, if you’re serious about not setting yourself or other artists up and adamant about using AI in the future, here is a bare minimum checklist you can run on any AI music tool before you put your name on it.

1. Training data transparency

   1. Understand it takes MASSIVE amounts of data to train an AI model, MASSIVE like the entire Spotify catalogue.

   2. Is there a clearly understandable statement about what type of data they trained on? Licensed libraries, in-house sessions they own the rights to, public domain, CC-BY, scraped from the web?

   3. Are there names or specific catalogs that can be plausibly verified?

2. Legal Posture

   1. DO they publicly disclose what API’s they are using, or if they developed their own API or machine learning algorithm?

   2. Are they currently being sued or using an API of a company that may be under legal scrutiny?

   3. If yes, are they still saying their stuff is commercially safe? If so, RED FLAG!

3. Data handling

   1. What happens to your uploads? Are they training the model as well, or are they permanently deleting? If so, how are they deleted?

   2. Are your uploads stored? Or shared with a third party?

4. What is their Business Model

   1. One-time ‘lifetime’ deals on top of someone else’s API are not sustainable. If it looks too good to be true, it more than likely is.

5. Community Feedback

   1. Google the company and look for what users on Reddit or other trusted forums are saying. If the feedback isn’t good, take it at face value that you may need to do more investigating before signing a TOS.

6. What are the Terms of Service

   1. Does the marketing language say things like “ethically sourced” and “we own our data,” while the TOS says “you are responsible for any infringement?” "or “ Your uploads may be used to train the model"?”That’s exactly the pattern Shawdi P called out, so watch out

🏁 The Bottom Line

Let this OpenBeat AI drama be a wake-up call

Right now is the wild west of AI music, where terms like “ethical,” “Fair use,” and “licensed” are being thrown around as simple marketing tactics. It’s akin to the NFT world; it’s going to take some time before regulation catches up, and these companies will be long gone before that.

For producers: Trust but verify is nearly dead. If a tool claims to be ethical, you can pretty much assume at this juncture that it’s not. Unless you’ve discovered a massive number of musicians who have all claimed to be actively working on a model to ensure that the model is ethically trained, it’s probably not real. And if it is real, it’s definitely not going to be a one-time fee.

Even then, still ask for taiing data sources, licensing partners, and what happens to uploads, and if they are using a third-party API>

For Creators: The reputational risk of promoting AI tools is pretty significant. DJ Pain1 is a prime example of someone who has been at the front of the leading charge against unethical AI, only to be used in a cash grab campaign that only has big data’s best interest in mind. What was well-intentioned can go terribly wrong for your brand. However, his response is also what real accountability looks like.

For Songwriters: If you’re a songwriter considering how powerful the tool is to produce records you couldn’t otherwise sing, also consider how powerful the connection is between humans., theres nothing limiting you from using AI as a tool to get ideas to humans who can provide the real human emotion.

For the Industry: AI is nothing new; however, the SUno lawsuits and recent settlements prove there is real money to be made from AI. There’s also real pain, licensing deals will be cut, new careers will be made, and others will still fight for fair use. But square in the middle is the ethics of disclosure. No company has the right or an excuse to lie to its users about any aspect of its product. If you’re utilizing AI, be honest about where it comes from; you may find that people’s positions will change, especially with hit record after hit record.

All in all

Oppenbeat tried to sell us some bullshit. A bridge between ethical AI and what we know to be true, big data is in music wholeheartedly, and there are only a few players that can really make a difference in the game. Those being sued or currently working with the major labels.

As a toll booth to Suno, I would only expect to find very similar dealings in the future, only wrapped up in prettier wrappers or even those that fully disclose where their data is sourced from.

As of recently, there has been pending legislation that aims to limit state regulation of AI.

In the words of Tyler, the Creator…

🔥 What Saturation Really Does (and Why It’s Not Just Distortion)

Saturation adds harmonic content that gives sounds perceived warmth, density, and loudness.
It’s what analog gear naturally does — but digital systems don’t — which is why saturation plugins are essential for giving in-the-box mixes life.

Think of saturation as tone enhancement through controlled imperfection.
Where distortion destroys, saturation enhances — adding harmonics that give depth, cohesion, and character.

🧪 My Go-To Saturation Plugins (and How I Actually Use Them)

Here’s my personal saturation chain — from subtle harmonic glue to full-on analog grit — plus how I dial each one in.

(not in any specific order of importance either)

Standalone MPC/AKai Force

AIR Tube Saturation (MPC)
Your “make this sound less like a laptop” button.

This one is perfect for taking sterile digital sources and giving them some harmonic meat without turning things into fuzz. It adds that soft tube bloom that makes vocals, guitars, pads, and samples feel a bit more expensive and less brittle.

Best use: Subtle tone shaper on individual tracks.

• Vocals that feel thin or “demo-ish.”

• Guitars, synths or pads that need warmth and glue

• Clean samples that need a little “harmonic enhancement”

How to dial it in:

• Keep the Drive low and lean into the warmer tone options.

• Work in the 15–25% drive range for most sources so it sweetens without announcing itself.

• Adjust the headroom to clamp the signal for tube compression

• If the top end gets a little spicy, follow it with a gentle EQ cut in the upper highs to keep things smooth.

Soft Clipper & Diode Clipper
Your “don’t blow up the meters, but still hit hard” pair.

These two live in my “dynamic safety net” lane:

• Soft Clipper keeps things feeling clean and controlled when peaks get wild.

• Diode Clipper adds that crunchy, aggressive transient smack that just works on MPC drums and bass.

Best use:

• Soft Clipper: On drum bus, mix bus, or loud stems where you want loudness without harsh brickwall limiting.

• Diode Clipper: On kicks, snares, synth basses, or aggressive leads that need bite and character.

How to dial it in:

• Set a low threshold so it catches the hottest peaks, not the whole signal.

• Use your DAW’s parallel blend or mix control if available — clip a bit harder, then blend back for punch without wrecking the transient shape.

• Always level-match and listen for feel: louder is not automatically better.

Akai “Grimey Distortion”
That “MPC 2000 in a bad mood” energy.

This one isn’t about clean enhancement — it’s about attitude. The Grimey Distortion has that thick, slightly ugly-in-a-good-way character that feels like older MPCs getting pushed too hard. Great when you want drums or samples to feel lived-in and aggressive instead of polite.

Best use:

• Parallel distortion for drum breaks, one-shots, and chops

• Toughening up 808s or bass so they poke through small speakers

• Adding “dirt layer” to samples in boom-bap, grime, or heavy hip-hop

How to dial it in:

• Run it on an aux/parallel bus and blend it in under the clean signal.

• Turn the grime down to 1-2 and the drive below 10, make sure your input level is lower than -18dB and use drive to lift the signal into the distortion.

• Push the distortion more than you think on the aux, then tuck the mix knob down so you’re just hearing the tone and texture, not full-on meltdown.

• Use a low-pass or band-pass after it if the high fizz gets in the way.

• track in at EXTREMELY low levels and keep the signal fidelity, add small amounts of drive for more subtle distortion and timber adjustment.

MSXII LoFlyTape & LoFlyDirt
Instant “this came off a dusty cassette” vibes.

These two are pure vibe tools:

• LoFlyTape gives gentle tape-style compression, subtle wobble, and a smooth high roll-off.

• LoFlyDirt piles on the grain, dust, and harmonic grit that just screams boom-bap and soul.

Best use:

• LoFlyTape: On the mix bus, melodic buses, or keys to round off the top and pull things together. Add saturation and a bit of noise for some authentic “printed to tape” feeling.

• LoFlyDirt: On drum buses, sample chops, or chorus sections where you want extra grime and movement or over an entire mix.

How to dial it in:

• Keep LoFlyTape light on the mix bus — think “glue and soften,” not “destroy” . Be mindful some of the tape emulations get a little wobbly

• Use LoFlyDirt more aggressively on drums or featured sections, then automate it so the track gets dirtier on hooks/choruses. SP404 (v) is meant to emulate the vinyl effect on the SP404. Very useful for drums and samples.

• Don’t be afraid to filter before or after these plugins so the dirt sits in the mids and doesn’t turn into fizzy noise.

AIR Filter (VCA Distortion / Overdrive)
Sleeper hit: ignore the filter, abuse the distortion.

Even if you’re not reaching for it as a traditional filter, the VCA distortion and overdrive inside AIR Filter have a really nice tone — more musical than a lot of generic DAW overdrives, with a satisfying push that doesn’t instantly turn things to sandpaper.

Best use:

• On drums and percussion when you want more knock and hair.

• On basses and synths that need to cut without just boosting highs.

• As a character stage before compression on a subgroup.

How to dial it in:

• Set the filter to a neutral or wide-open state so it’s not really shaping the tone — you’re here for the distortion circuit, not the filter.

• Start with VCA Distortion for punch and density; switch to Overdrive when you want more obvious breakup and midrange growl.

• Push the input until you feel the tone “lean forward,” then back off a touch. Use output level to match volume and A/B until you’re getting vibe, not mud.

Daw Plugins of Choice

*below are plugins I absolutely LOVE, theyre not popular, theyre not common but I love the concept behind them and what they consistently output at different sample rates

Plogue ChipCrusher
Retro coloration done right. Bit depth, sample rate, and speaker emulation combine to recreate old-school tone.

Best Use: Great for sound design and emulating older technology like computers or keyboards.

How to dial it in:

• Choose a DAC or conversion method. I personally use mulaw or PCM and emulate older samplers like the SP12, SP1200 or MPC60/

• Choose background noise: Most older gear had imperfections in the signal path or slight noise coming from electrical components. Not only does this add to the harmonic content of the signal, but adds a level of realism or believability to whatever you pass through.

• Pick a Cabinet: When looking to emulate actual gear in a realistic space rather than the signal coming out of the gear, this is your friend. Combining this with spacializing plugins like Panorama 7 or Soundly’s Place It, you can achieve some pretty convincing emulations of actual gear being recorded with micropones which adds a level of sonic realism to your tracks.

  • Bonus Tip: Use Airwindows uLawEncode before and after the plugin to emulate broadcast companding which was very similar to the method used to reduce signal-to-noise ratio in the MPC60.

  • Be sure to emulate ‘pre-emphasis’ by either increasing the high frequencies before chipcrusher and decreasing afterwards or a simpler method of using pre and post gain inside of the plugin. Tweak this to your liking

  • Optimal input levels for uLaw Encode are going to be around -18dB otherwise it just distorts.. dont let that input level fool you though.. it packs a punch when done right.

• There’s no “drive” knob, so the sound comes from how hard you hit it, similar to an actual console. Push the level going into the plugin for more color, pull it back for something cleaner. Use the output trim to match level so you’re not being fooled by loudness.
  

Airwindows Desk/Tube Desk
“Make this channel stop sounding like a cold DAW track.”

Desk is basically an analog gain-stage emulator. Think of it like giving each channel its own little piece of console behavior. It smooths out those pokey digital peaks and adds a bit of analog-style movement so things don’t feel plasticky or brittle when you start stacking tracks.

Best use: First insert on important channels or busses.

• Great on drums and percussion to tame spiky transients.

• Nice on digital synths and samples that feel a little too sharp or “fake.”

How to dial it in:
It’s a true set-and-forget plugin:

• Want more attitude? Push the signal into Desk harder.

• Want it cleaner? Back off the input level.

• Know that ‘squishy’ feeling amplifiers have when driven, increase the Power Sag to emulate the slight drop in voltage that lightly compresses or puffs up what you’re driving into it.

Tube desk just reacts to volume. No menu-diving, no overthinking — get your gain staging right and let it do its thing.

Airwindows Interstage
The “this suddenly feels 3D and expensive” button.

Interstage isn’t a distortion plugin. It’s modeling what happens between analog stages — transformers, capacitors, all the non-linear weirdness that makes hardware feel solid and “real.” The result is a slight low-mid weight, a bit of top-end smoothing, and less of that icy “in the box” sheen.

Best use: Right before a super-clean digital EQ or compressor. Or essentially anywhere in the signal chain.You’re basically feeding your clinical tools a more “analog-shaped” signal so they respond and sound less sterile. (and you can use multiple instances of them)

How to dial it in:
Just like with most of the good stuff from Airwindows, there are no knobs. It’s meant to live at 100% wet:

• Drop it in the chain.

• Add before/ after most effects.

• Bypass/enable and listen for the added “heft” and slight de-edging in the highs.

If your mix feels a little flat and too “DAW-y,” Interstage is one of those tiny moves that just adds a tiny bit of something

Airwindows MOJO
That “finished record” fairy dust.

Mojo is one of those plugins that doesn’t scream “effect” but makes things feel more expensive and glued. It’s doing a mix of saturation, low-end thickening, and high-end smoothing that mimics what happens when audio passes through a bunch of analog stages repeatedly.

Think: less brittle top, more weight in the mids, and a subtle sense of push that helps sounds sit in a mix without you knowing why.

Its not stated anywhere in the specs, but Mojo adds a bit of 2nd order harmonics similar to the SSL 9000 which is incredible for a free plugin

Best use: On individual tracks or subgroups that feel a little flat or weak.

• Great on vocals that need to feel “in front” without harshness.

• Killer on bass, keys, guitars, or samples that sound too clean or “demo-ish.”

• You can also sneak it on your mix bus at very low intensity for a global polish.

How to dial it in:

• Start with the signal into Mojo at a low levels until you start to ‘feel’ the sound getting fuller..

• LIke with all Airwindows plugins, you’ll drive the signal into this until you’re getting the sound that you want..however stay conservative with this one, the best results come from a bit of moderation.

• As always, level-match: toggle it on and off and make sure louder isn’t tricking you. You’re listening for density, warmth, and cohesion — not obvious distortion.

Airwindows uLawEncode / uLawDecode
“Companding like a busted digital box — in a good way.”

uLaw is Airwindows’ take on classic µ-law companding — the same kind of nonlinear encode/decode curve used in old telephony and some early digital systems. In practice, that means it pushes quiet details up and squashes peaks in a very specific, non-musical-on-paper but musical-in-practice way. Used right, it gives drums, samples, and vocals this compressed-but-not-a-compressor density that feels very “early digital hardware.”

Paired with bitcrushers like pockey, chipcrusher, or derez3, you can either:

• Use them together as a companding stage (encode → hit other processing → decode), or

• Use uLaw by itself as a character effect to add forward, gritty density without bitrate reduction.

Best use:

• On drum buses or individual hits when you want front-loaded punch and a weirdly satisfying digital clamp.

• On sample chops to make them feel like they came off some old converter, not a pristine 32-bit float session.

• As a companding sandwich: encode, then distort, boost clip/EQ, then decode so the overall shape feels more controlled and “hardware processed” instead of obviously mangled.

How to dial it in:

Encode for character :

• Drop uLawEncode on a drum bus, sample bus, or vocal.

• Drive the input until you hear transients get tighter and denser, not just smaller.

• Level-match and A/B — you’re listening for “forward and glued” rather than flat and smashed.

• If it’s too obvious, move it to a parallel bus:

  • Smash the parallel with uLaw.

  • Blend underneath the clean signal for a subtle “digital front” layer.

Companding chain (uLaw → FX → uLawDecode):

• Put uLaw first in the chain.

• Follow it with something that reacts nicely to the denser signal:

  • Bitcrushing like Chipcrusher, MbitFun, Derez3,

  • Slight EQ boost in the highs (before bitcrushing for extra broadcast companding emulation)

• Then put uLawDecode after those.

  • This “re-expands” the signal somewhat, but with your processing baked into the companded shape.

• Fine-tune by adjusting how hard you hit uLaw on the way in. Small changes at the encode stage can completely change how everything downstream feels.

  • Like explained previously, this plugin takes an optimal input signal around -18dB, but whatever you do in between stages will help boost the signal quite musically.

Used subtly, uLaw/uLawDecode is one of those “why does this feel more finished?” stages. Push it and it turns into a very specific crunchy, front-loaded digital weight that can be perfect for aggressive drums and chopped samples.

There is a plugin called Pockey that does something similar, however I prefer teh ability to control the type of emulation inside of the companding.

Track-Level/Instrument-Level:

• AIR Soft Clipper or Diode for drums and bass transient control.

• AIR Tube/Filter VCA Distortion on vocals or guitars for color and presence.\

• uLawEncode/Decode combination with Chipcrusher on samples recorded into the MPC

• Grimey distortion on synths

• Tube desk + Interstage on synths or instruments recorded into MPC

Bus-Level:

• AIR Soft Clipper on drums

You can have clean EQs, solid compression, and perfect balance — but if your mix sounds flat, it won’t move people.
Depth is what separates an amateur mix from a professional one. It’s that invisible dimension that makes vocals feel close, drums feel physical, and ambience feel infinite.

1. The Real Problem: Too Much Space, Not Enough Structure

Most producers think “depth” means adding more reverb. But depth is a combination of volume, EQ, timing, and width decisions.
Common rookie mistakes include:

• Reverb on everything → zero definition.

• Panning too wide → hollow center.

• No contrast between front and back elements.

Depth is perception — not plugins. It’s how you trick the ear into hearing distance.

2. The Practical Fix: 3 Steps to Dimensional Clarity

1. Think in “Depth Layers” (Front–Middle–Back)
Every element should have a home:

• Front: Dry, bright, loud (vocals, snare)

2. Establish “where” elements of your mix will live by using panning,EQ and compression. Closer will sound brigher while futher away will sound darker.

3. Use early reflections to determine how much of the sound will create a reverb ‘shadow’ in your simulated space. further away will have less early reflections and closer will have more.

3. Take Advantage of Reverb Pre-Delay
Instead of drowning sounds in reverb, the reverb pre-delay will act as the ‘front/back’ panner. This creates a sense of space while maintaining clarity.

• 60–120ms mono delay for vocals

• 10–30ms micro delay (no feedback) for widening instruments
  Then send that delay to your reverb bus — not the dry track.

These three steps work hand in hand in a critical way. Essentially this is utilizing reverb to create a space that seems realistic for elements of your mix.

Even when mixing sample based material, this can be a powerful way of creating realism and ‘haptic’ sounding mixes , those that feel like they are created in a real space or recorded in a real space.

4. Automate Depth
Depth shouldn’t be static. Automate reverb or delay sends so the space breathes with the song.
Example: Pull the reverb send down during verses, then open it up in the chorus. This dynamic contrast makes your mix feel alive.

5. Use Speaker Emulation Plugins

This is where the line between mixing, producing and sound design start to converge.

Speaker placement plugins utilize convolution reverb, HRTF (head related transfer function), binaural synthesis, alongside acoustic environment modeling to accomplish ‘placing’ elements of your mix inside a realistic sounding space.

Plugins like Wave Arts Panorama7 (paid), Torpedo Wall of Sound (Free Trial), and Soundly Place It (Free) re-create spaces that give the feeling of analog recording in a real space.

Instead of taming the loud parts, you lift the quiet ones. Done right, it sounds big, exciting, and expensive — without crushing the groove.

Step 1 — Understand the Goal

Parallel compression is about perceived loudness.
You’re not just turning things up — you’re filling in the quieter transients with compressed sustain.

Think of it as painting shadows underneath the highlights of your mix.

Use it when:

• Drums feel thin or uneven

• Vocals lack body

• The mix sounds too polite but you don’t want to lose punch

Step 2 — Build the Setup

There are two main approaches:

1. Send/Return Method (Classic “New York” Style):

• Create an aux track called “Parallel Comp.”

• Send your drums, vocals, or full mix to it.

• Insert a compressor and squash it hard (10–20 dB gain reduction).

• Blend that return under the dry signal.

2. Built-in Parallel Mix Controls:

Full Mix Bus:

You’ve probably heard it before:

“You don’t have to worry about clipping — it’s 32-bit float.”

That’s half true and half the reason so many of your mixes sound harsh, crunchy, smeared or simply not where you want them.

Yes, 32-bit float gives your DAW massive mathematical headroom theoretically hundreds of dB above 0 dBFS. But that protection only applies between channels, not inside your plugins. The moment your signal enters a processor that models analog behavior (compressors, EQs, saturators, limiters, etc.), you can scrap all that theoretical headroom..

Those plugins don’t care about 32-bit math. They’re built to behave like hardware , so that means they clip, they distort, fold over if your input is too hot (but they also have a sweet spot as well)

Internal Clipping Is the Silent Mix Killer

Let’s walk through a real example:

1. You’ve got a vocal that peaks around -3 dBFS.

2. You add an EQ, boost 5 kHz by +6 dB.

3. Suddenly, that boosted frequency is slamming your next plugin at +3 dBFS.

4. Your compressor now sees an overloaded signal and distorts even though your DAW’s output meter looks fine.

This is internal clipping. It’s happening inside your plugin chain long before your master fader shows red.

The fix? Gain stage between every stage not just track by track, but plugin by plugin.

Why Floating Point Doesn’t Save You

32-bit float prevents hard digital clipping at the summing bus level meaning your overall mix can temporarily exceed 0 dBFS internally without crunching. But as soon as that signal:

• hits a plugin expecting -18 dBFS nominal input, or

• hits your mix bus limiter, or

• hits your converter on export…

…it will clip.

Think of it like this: 32-bit float keeps your DAW from catching fire, but it doesn’t stop your signal processors from overcooking.

How to Spot Hidden Clipping

Here’s how to find where the damage is happening:

1. Check every plugin’s output meter. If it’s hitting red or sitting near 0 dBFS, trim it down if it doesnt have one...

2. use a VU meter after heavy processors (like saturation or compression). Aim for -18 dBFS RMS = 0 VU.(beware most of these are calibrated slightly differntly)

3. Bypass plugins one by one. If your mix suddenly clears up when something’s off, that’s your culprit.

4. Watch your mix bus gain reduction. If your limiter is eating 6–8 dB before mastering, your mix is probably too hot upstream.

The 32-Bit Truth: It’s a Safety Net, Not a Free Pass

Your DAW’s float precision is amazing but it’s not an excuse to ignore level discipline. The same rules apply today that did yesterday.
Proper headroom is psychological as much as technical. A mix that lives around -18 to -12 dBFS feels open, controlled, and musical. Push everything near 0, and even if it’s not technically clipping, your mix will sound stressed.

Remember: Headroom isn’t wasted space it’s breathing room for your transients, dynamics, and tonal balance. IF anything this gives you room to crank the FINAL plugin (if you’re still into the loudness wars thing)

Fixing the “Too Hot” Mix

If your mix keeps clipping or sounding harsh, try this:

1. Select all your tracks and pull the faders down -6 to -10 dB.

2. Reset your mix bus plugins. Let the signal breathe.

3. Add a trim plugin (or stage your input via clip gain or whatever sound generator) and before every major processor. Keep things hovering around -18 dBFS in and out.

4. Re-evaluate tone and balance. You’ll notice your EQs and compressors suddenly sound smoother and easier to control.

Quick Reference: Safe Headroom Levels

• Individual tracks (RMS): -18 to -14 dBFS (not drums)

• Peaks/drums: -10 to -6 dBFS (but random peaks should be controlled with compression/clipping/limiting if affecting the mix negatively)

• Mix bus (pre-master): around -9 to -6 dB peak (sometimes I find my mix averaging at -12dB)

• Master output (after limiter): -1 dB ceiling (if mastering your own mix)

These aren’t concrete rules but they’re healthy ranges that keep your plugins happy and your sound consistent.
